Time Zone Converter

Pick two time zones, then a date and a time. The converter applies daylight saving for that exact date, so a meeting in March or November lands on the right hour.

A time zone difference is not a fixed number: it depends on the date, because each zone follows its own daylight saving calendar.

How to convert between two time zones

Every zone is an offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). To convert, take the time in the first zone, subtract its offset to get UTC, then add the offset of the second zone. A 9:00 meeting in New York in January is 14:00 UTC, which is 19:30 in India at UTC+5:30.

The card above does those steps for you. Choose the zone you know on the left and the zone you need on the right, then set the date and time. With both fields empty it follows your device clock, so it also works as a quick check of what time it is somewhere else right now. For a city rather than a zone, the London clock and the other world clocks show the live local time.

Daylight saving makes the gap move

Most of the United States moves its clocks forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November, as set by federal law and administered by the US Department of Transportation. The European Union and the UK switch on the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October. India, China, Japan and most of Africa do not use daylight saving at all.

Because these calendars differ, the hours between two places change a few times a year. The pair pages listed above show a dated list of every stretch with one constant difference, computed for this year and next, so you can plan a call in the weeks when the gap is unusual.

Abbreviations are not unique

Short names like CST or IST mean different zones in different countries. Check the full name before you send an invitation.

  • CST is US Central Time (UTC−6) but also China Standard Time (UTC+8).
  • IST usually means India Standard Time (UTC+5:30), but Ireland and Israel use it too.
  • EST in winter becomes EDT in summer; writing EST for a July meeting is off by an hour.
  • When in doubt, give the time in UTC as well.

Where the offsets come from

The converter does not keep its own table of offsets. It asks your browser, which ships the IANA time zone database, the shared record of every zone's offsets and clock changes that operating systems and phones use. When a country changes its rules, the database is updated and the next browser update carries the new rules.

Each zone is stored under a place name such as America/New_York or Asia/Kolkata rather than an abbreviation, which avoids the CST and IST mix-ups. The pages in this family show those identifiers next to the everyday names.

Tips for scheduling across zones

  • State the zone with every time, for example 3 PM EDT.
  • Check dates near the March and October–November clock changes twice.
  • For people in several zones, convert from UTC rather than from one local time.
  • Remember the date can change: a Monday evening in the US is Tuesday morning in Asia.

Time zone converter questions

Does the converter handle daylight saving time?

Yes. Offsets come from the IANA time zone database built into your browser, so the converter knows on which date each zone moves its clocks and applies the right offset for the date you enter.

Why is the difference between two zones not the same all year?

Zones change clocks on different dates, and some never change. New York and London are usually five hours apart, but for a few weeks in March and in autumn the gap is four hours because the US and the UK switch on different Sundays.

What is the difference between GMT and UTC?

For clock times they are the same: UTC+0. UTC is the scientific time standard; GMT is the older name still used for the zone. UK civil time is not always GMT, because the UK moves to BST in summer.

Why do some zones have half-hour offsets?

Countries choose their own legal time. India uses UTC+5:30 nationwide and Nepal uses UTC+5:45, so converting to them shifts the minutes as well as the hours.

Can I convert a time that is not now?

Yes. Type any date and time on the left; the right side shows the matching local time and date in the other zone. Clear both fields to follow the current time again.
