In short
- 1Denver, Salt Lake City and Albuquerque are 2 hours behind New York all year.
- 2Eastern is UTC−5 (EST) or UTC−4 (EDT); Mountain is UTC−7 (MST) or UTC−6 (MDT).
- 3Both zones change clocks on the same Sundays in March and November.
- 4Most of Arizona stays on MST, so Phoenix is 3 hours behind New York from March to November.
Booking calls with the Mountain states
A two-hour gap is easy to live with. Office hours overlap from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM Eastern, which is 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM in Denver. The awkward hours are the extremes: a 9:00 AM Eastern kick-off is 7:00 AM in Salt Lake City, and a 4:00 PM Mountain call is already 6:00 PM in New York.
Evening TV in the Mountain zone often runs on its own schedule, with network prime time starting at 7:00 PM local in some markets, so check local listings rather than doing the math.

Phoenix keeps one clock
MST in Arizona means MST all year
The Uniform Time Act lets a state stay on standard time, and Arizona does, except for the Navajo Nation.
- In winter Phoenix and Denver both show MST, two hours behind New York.
- In summer Phoenix stays on MST while Denver moves to MDT, so Phoenix is three hours behind New York.
- For invites to Arizona, write the UTC offset or 'Arizona time'.
How the clocks change
Eastern and Mountain zones both move forward at 2:00 AM local time on the second Sunday in March and back at 2:00 AM on the first Sunday in November, as the US Department of Transportation explains. Because each zone changes on its own local clock, New York switches two hours before Denver, and on those two nights the gap is briefly three hours or one hour.
Live clocks for Denver and Washington, DC show both zones now. For the Midwest, use CST to MST.
