Planning a coast-to-coast day

The two coasts share five working hours, from noon to 5:00 PM Eastern, which is 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM Pacific. Teams that need both coasts in the room usually aim for 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Eastern, so nobody joins before 9:00 AM or after 5:00 PM local time.

Deadlines need care. If a filing is due at 5:00 PM Eastern, a West Coast sender has only until 2:00 PM. In the other direction, a 'by end of day' request from Los Angeles can arrive in New York at 8:00 PM.

Why the gap never changes

Both zones follow the federal daylight-saving rule: forward on the second Sunday in March, back on the first Sunday in November, each at 2:00 AM local time, as the US Department of Transportation sets out. The East changes three hours before the West, so on those two nights the gap is briefly four hours or two, and by morning it is three again.
