Convert to the format the reader has, not the one you like: DOCX for almost anyone, ODT for LibreOffice, Markdown or LaTeX for writers who work in plain text.
Formats in and out
- Reflowable document
- Also called flowing text · editable layout
- A document whose text rewraps to fit the page or screen it is shown on, such as DOCX, ODT, RTF, HTML or Markdown. Its opposite is a fixed layout like PDF, where every line has a set position. Converting between reflowable formats keeps text editable; converting from a fixed layout means rebuilding paragraphs from positions.
The input list covers the word processors people actually use, Microsoft Word old and new, LibreOffice and OpenOffice, Apple Pages, Hancom HWP and Kingsoft WPS, along with the plain formats that sit between them: RTF, HTML, Markdown, LaTeX and text. PDF and EPUB are accepted as sources too, and presentations and spreadsheets can be converted within their own family, for example PowerPoint to OpenDocument Presentation or Numbers to Excel.
The output list is shorter on purpose. Each target is one that a common program opens without add-ons. DOCX is the general answer. DOC exists only for Word 2003 and older systems that some offices still run. ODT is the OpenDocument format used by LibreOffice and preferred by several public bodies. RTF is a safe middle ground for simple editors. HTML, Markdown and TXT strip a document down for the web, for notes apps and for code repositories. LaTeX suits academic writing in editors such as Overleaf, and HWP is for readers in Korea who use Hancom Office.
A conversion only goes as far as the target can follow. Moving from DOCX to ODT or RTF keeps nearly everything, because those formats describe pages in much the same way. Moving to HTML or Markdown keeps the structure but drops page-based features such as headers, footers, columns and exact margins, since a web page or a notes file has no pages. Going to TXT keeps the words and nothing else. Choose the target first, then pick the Formatting level that matches it.
PDF input deserves its own note. A PDF records where each line sits on the page, not where a paragraph starts and ends, so the converter rebuilds paragraphs, columns and tables from those positions. Simple reports and letters come back very close to the original. Brochures with many text boxes, forms and pages with several columns need more cleanup, and the result is a starting point for editing rather than a perfect copy. If you only need a PDF in the first place, the Convert to PDF tool works in the other direction with more page settings.
Why DOCX is the safe default
DOCX at a glance
- MIME type
- application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document
- File extensions
- .docx, .word, .docs
- Developed by
- Microsoft
- First released
- 2007
- Open specification
- Yes
DOCX is an open standard, published as ECMA-376 and ISO/IEC 29500, so programs other than Word can read and write it faithfully.
A DOCX file is a ZIP archive of XML parts: the text, the styles, the images and the settings are stored separately inside it. Because the specification is public, Google Docs, LibreOffice, Apple Pages, WPS Office and many phone apps all handle it well, which makes it the most dependable format for sending an editable document to someone whose software you do not know.
The older DOC format is a closed binary format from Microsoft. Modern Word still opens it, but other programs read it less reliably and it cannot hold some newer features. Convert DOC files to DOCX when you plan to keep editing them, and only go the other way when an old system rejects anything else.
OpenDocument Text is the other open standard for word processing, maintained by OASIS and published as ISO/IEC 26300. Word opens ODT files, but complex layouts can shift slightly when a document moves between the two families, so check tables and page breaks when a file crosses over.
Hancom HWP and Apple Pages are the two formats people most often get stuck with. HWP is common in Korean schools, companies and public offices, and Pages is the default word processor on Macs, iPads and iPhones. Both open well only in their own apps. Converting them to DOCX gives a copy that anyone can open and edit, while the reverse direction, DOCX to HWP, helps when a Korean office asks for its own format.
What the settings change
Formatting: Keep all, Simple or Text only
Keep all carries fonts, colors, tables and layout over as closely as the target allows. Simple keeps only the structure, meaning headings, lists, bold and tables, which gives clean Markdown or HTML. Text only removes every style and leaves the words, which is handy for pasting into forms or a content system.
Include images
Pictures and charts are copied into the result by default. Text formats cannot hold images, so for TXT and Markdown the images are saved next to the text in a ZIP and linked from it.
Include comments
Off by default. Switch it on to carry comments and tracked changes into the new file when the review history matters.
OCR scanned pages
Applies to PDF input. Pages that are pictures of text are recognized so the words become editable. Recognition is good on clean prints and weaker on faint or handwritten pages, so read the result before relying on it.
Text encoding and line endings
For TXT, Markdown, HTML, LaTeX and CSV output. UTF-8 handles every language; UTF-8 with BOM helps older Windows programs detect it. Line endings can be LF for macOS, Linux and code editors, or CRLF for classic Windows tools.
Pages and sheets
Convert a whole PDF or presentation, or only a Page range such as 2-5. Excel input with several sheets can give one section per sheet or just the first sheet.
Habits that give cleaner results
Do
- Use common fonts in the source, or send a PDF when the look must not change on the reader's computer.
- Set Formatting to Simple when a PDF comes back with odd line breaks, then restyle the text in Word.
- Keep OCR scanned pages on for scanned PDFs. For photos of pages, use the Image to Text tool instead.
- Pick UTF-8 with BOM under Text encoding if accents or Asian characters look garbled in TXT or CSV.
Avoid
- Markdown for tables with merged or nested cells; choose HTML or DOCX for those.
- Saving to DOC unless an old system demands it, because newer Word features do not fit the format.
Plain-text targets are worth a closer look, because they are often the best format for people who write rather than lay out. Markdown keeps headings, lists, links, emphasis and simple tables in a form that reads well even before it is rendered, and it is the native format of note apps, wikis and code hosting sites. HTML keeps a little more, such as merged table cells and image sizes, and can be pasted into most website editors. LaTeX is the standard for papers with references and equations, and the converted file gives you a clean base to compile in your editor.
The plain formats also make documents easier to compare and store. A text file can be tracked line by line in version control, searched with any tool and opened decades from now without special software. When you want both an editable master and a fixed copy, keep the Markdown or DOCX and produce a PDF from it each time you share. The other tools for documents cover the remaining cases: turning pages into pictures, reading text from scans and converting ebooks or data files.

Document converter questions
Which format should I convert to if I am not sure?
DOCX. Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, Apple Pages and most phone apps open it, and it keeps tables, images and styles. Pick ODT when the recipient works in LibreOffice or a public office that asks for OpenDocument.
Can I edit a PDF after converting it to Word?
Yes, the result is a normal DOCX. A PDF stores text as positioned lines rather than paragraphs, so check the spacing and line breaks afterwards. Scanned pages are read with OCR when OCR scanned pages is on, which is the default.
How do I open an Apple Pages file on Windows?
Convert it to DOCX. Pages documents can only be opened in Apple's own apps, while the DOCX version opens in Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice on any system.
Does the converter keep comments and tracked changes?
Only if you ask it to. Include comments is off by default, which gives a clean final copy. Switch it on when you are handing a draft to someone who should see the review history.
Accents in my TXT export look broken. What went wrong?
The program opening it is reading the wrong encoding. Convert again with Text encoding set to UTF-8 with BOM, which Excel and older Windows tools recognize. Legacy encodings are only needed for very old software.
Can I convert a Word file to LaTeX for Overleaf?
Yes. Choose LaTeX (.tex) under Convert to. Headings, lists, tables and footnotes are written as LaTeX commands. Equations and complex layouts usually need some cleanup in the editor.
I only need a PDF. Should I use this tool?
Convert to PDF has more PDF settings, such as page size, margins, PDF/A and passwords. This converter can write PDF too, but it is made for moving between editable formats.
