EPUB is maintained by the W3C; the current version is EPUB 3.3. An EPUB file is a ZIP archive of web pages, images and a table of contents.

Which format each reader takes

  • Kindle owners

Copy books over by USB, or send them by email with Amazon's Send to Kindle service.

Convert to AZW3 for cable transfer; Send to Kindle takes EPUB as it is.

  • Kobo, Nook and Apple Books readers

Read EPUB natively and organize it in the device's own library.

Convert MOBI, AZW3, FB2 or Word files to EPUB.

  • Phone and tablet readers

Read in an app on a small screen, where text that reflows matters more than page design.

Pick EPUB with the Phone or Tablet device setting.

  • People who print or annotate

Want fixed pages to print, mark up or hand out in a class.

Convert to PDF at A5, A4 or Letter.

The ebook world is split mainly between EPUB and Amazon's own formats. EPUB is an open standard, so most readers and apps outside the Amazon ecosystem open it directly: Kobo, Nook, PocketBook, Apple Books, Google Play Books and many free reading apps on Android, iOS and desktop computers. Kindles use Amazon formats. AZW3, also known as Kindle Format 8, supports modern layouts, embedded fonts and better image handling, and it is what to choose when you copy a book onto a Kindle with a USB cable. MOBI is the older Kindle format with simpler formatting; it is only worth picking for early Kindle models that cannot read AZW3.

Amazon's Send to Kindle service, which delivers books to your Kindle library by email, app or browser upload, accepts EPUB files and converts them for the device. Since 2022 it no longer accepts MOBI files for sending, which surprised many people with older libraries. In practice, that means an EPUB is now the most flexible single copy of a book: it works for almost every reader directly and for Kindles through Send to Kindle. Keep AZW3 for cable transfers and for readers who prefer not to use their Amazon account.

FB2, or FictionBook, is an XML-based format popular in Russian and Eastern European ebook libraries. Converting it to EPUB opens those books on any mainstream reader. Plain text, Word documents and HTML files can also become ebooks, which is useful for reading your own drafts, long reports or saved articles on an e-ink screen.

Getting the finished file onto a device is the last step. Most e-readers appear as a drive when connected to a computer with a USB cable, and books copied into their documents folder show up in the library. Kobo and Nook readers take EPUB this way, and Kindles take AZW3. Reading apps on phones and tablets usually import a book when you open the downloaded file and choose the app from the share menu. Cloud libraries such as Google Play Books let you upload EPUB and PDF files from a browser and read them on every device signed in to the same account.

Writers use the same path in reverse. A manuscript in Word or Markdown can become an EPUB to proofread on the device readers will actually use, which shows awkward page breaks, oversized images and missing headings long before publication. Set the Title and Author fields so the test copy is easy to find in the library.

Books with DRM

Protected books cannot be converted

Most books bought from large stores are locked with DRM (digital rights management), which ties them to the store's own apps and devices. The converter works only with DRM-free files and does not remove protection.

  • Books from DRM-free publishers, public-domain libraries and author bundles convert normally.
  • Your own manuscripts, notes and exported documents are DRM-free.
  • Library loans and rented books stay locked to the lending app and expire on schedule, so they cannot be converted either.
  • If a store book will not convert, read it in the store's app or ask the seller whether a DRM-free download exists.
  • Remove extra metadata only clears publisher, ISBN, tag and description fields; it does not touch protection.

Comics, photo books and PDFs

Comic book archives are simpler than they look. A CBZ file is a ZIP archive of page images, and a CBR is the same idea packed with RAR. Comic readers open them page by page, in file-name order. The converter reads CBZ, CBR and CB7, writes CBZ, and can also turn a set of JPG, PNG or WebP images into a single book: upload the pages, leave Combine images into one book on and choose CBZ, EPUB or PDF. Give the files numbered names first, such as 001 and 002, so the pages come out in the right order.

For e-ink readers, Grayscale images turns every page to gray before it is saved. Most e-ink screens show gray anyway, so the picture looks the same while the book takes up less space. Image quality controls the JPEG compression of the pages; the default of 85 looks clean on e-ink, and lowering it makes large comic collections lighter.

PDF works in both directions, with a catch. Turning an EPUB into a PDF gives fixed pages for printing and annotating; set PDF page size to A5 for something close to a paperback, or match the reading device so each page fills the screen. Turning a PDF into EPUB lets the text reflow on a small screen, which works well for novels and other plain text but can lose the layout of magazines, textbooks and designed pages. For PDFs that only need to be smaller or split, the PDF tools are a better fit, and the Document Converter page handles editable office formats.

Layout, cover and book details

Reading device

Sets the screen size used for page breaks, image sizes and default fonts. Choose a specific Kindle, Kobo, Nook, a tablet or a phone, or leave it on Any device for a book that reads well everywhere.

Base font size, margins and alignment

Base font size at 0 keeps the book's own size; readers can change it on the device anyway. Page margins default to a narrow border that suits e-ink screens. Text alignment can stay as published, or be set to left or justified.

Cover

Keep the book's own cover, use the first image as the cover, which suits comics and photo books, or leave the book without one.

Table of contents and fonts

Table of contents builds a clickable chapter list from the headings. Embed fonts keeps the publisher's typefaces; switch it off to let the reader's fonts take over and make the file lighter.

Title and author

Fill these in to change the name shown in your reader's library, which helps when a converted file arrives with a missing or garbled title. Leave them empty to keep what the file already says.

How to convert an ebook

Ebook converter questions

Which ebook format works on Kindle devices?

AZW3 is the format current Kindles read directly when you copy a book over by cable. If you use Amazon's Send to Kindle service instead, you can simply send an EPUB, which Amazon converts on delivery. MOBI is only worth choosing for very old Kindle models.

Can I convert a Kindle book I bought from Amazon?

Not if it is protected with DRM, which most store purchases are. The converter only works with DRM-free files, such as books from DRM-free publishers, public-domain libraries and your own writing.

Will the converted book keep its chapters and table of contents?

Yes. The chapter structure is carried over, and Table of contents builds a clickable list from the headings so you can jump between chapters. Books without proper headings may get a shorter contents list.

Can I turn an EPUB into a PDF to print?

Yes. Choose PDF under Convert to and set PDF page size to A5 for a paperback feel or A4 or Letter for home printing. Raise Page margins a little if you plan to bind the pages.

Can I build a CBZ comic out of separate page images?

Upload the page images, choose CBZ, and leave Combine images into one book on. The pages are joined in file-name order, so number them 001, 002 and so on first.

Why does my PDF look cramped on an e-reader?

A PDF has fixed pages, so a small screen scales each page down rather than reflowing the text. Converting it to EPUB lets the text reflow; it works best for text-only PDFs, while heavily designed layouts can lose some formatting.

Are my books stored after converting?

No. Uploaded files are deleted once the conversion is done, and the converted books are deleted after 30 minutes.
