0 keeps the book's own size. E-readers let the reader change size anyway; this mainly matters for PDF, DOCX and TXT output.
Space around the text on each page. 5 mm suits e-ink screens; use 15–20 mm for a PDF you plan to print.
Justified text has straight edges on both sides like a printed book; left-aligned avoids wide gaps between words on small screens.
A5 is close to a paperback and reads well on tablets. Match device sizes the page to the reading device chosen above.
Keep the book's cover, use the first image as the cover (comics and photo books), or leave the book without one.
JPEG quality for pictures and comic pages. 85 looks identical on e-ink; lower it to shrink large comics.
Leave empty to keep the title stored in the file. This is the name shown in the reader's library.
Leave empty to keep the existing author.

MOBI still works on the earliest Kindles by USB cable. For anything else, EPUB or AZW3 is now the better choice.
Where MOBI stands today
MOBI comes from Mobipocket, a company Amazon bought in 2005, and it was the format of the first Kindles. Later Kindles added Amazon's newer KF8 format, sold as AZW3, which handles fonts, spacing and images far better. MOBI stayed around for compatibility, and for years it was also the easiest way to email your own books to a Kindle.
That last role has ended. Amazon's Send to Kindle service no longer accepts MOBI files and takes EPUB instead, converting it for the reader on Amazon's side. So if your goal is to get an EPUB onto a current Kindle by email, the app or the website, you do not need to convert anything: send the EPUB as it is.
MOBI still makes sense in a narrower set of cases: an early Kindle that predates KF8, an old Kindle app or reading program that was never updated, or a reader from another brand that lists MOBI among its formats. In those cases you copy the file by USB cable, and that is what this page is set up for.
EPUB and MOBI compared
EPUB
EPUB ebook
The open ebook standard first published by the IDPF in 2007 and now maintained by the W3C. Text reflows to fit any screen size, and the book is packaged with its images, styles and table of contents. Apple Books, Kobo and library apps read it, and current Kindle apps accept it through Send to Kindle.
- Open standard
MOBI
MOBI ebook
The Mobipocket format from 2000, which Amazon acquired and used for early Kindle books. It supports reflowing text with basic formatting, but not the newer layout features of EPUB or AZW3. Amazon has phased it out for new books, though older devices and libraries still contain MOBI files.
- Vendor format
Why convertConverting EPUB to MOBI moves a book from the open, current standard to an older Amazon format with simpler layout. Do it only for a device that reads MOBI and nothing better; otherwise keep the EPUB or choose AZW3.
EPUB is maintained by the W3C, and the current version is EPUB 3.3. MOBI is far more limited in what it can display. Expect simpler formatting after the conversion: embedded fonts, detailed spacing and some styling fall back to the Kindle's defaults, while the text, chapters, images and table of contents come through.
Books you sent to a Kindle as MOBI in the past are a separate matter from new conversions. This page only changes how a new copy is made; it does not affect files already on your device or in your library.

EPUB to MOBI questions
Do I need MOBI for my Kindle at all?
Usually not. Amazon's Send to Kindle service accepts EPUB and converts it for you, and recent Kindles read AZW3 files copied by cable. MOBI is mainly for the earliest Kindle models and old apps that read nothing else.
Which format should I use for a recent Kindle by USB?
AZW3, also called KF8. It supports better typography, embedded fonts and layout than MOBI. Choose AZW3 under Convert to, or use the Ebook Converter page, which offers it for each Kindle model.
Why can't Send to Kindle take my MOBI file?
Amazon stopped accepting MOBI files through Send to Kindle and now asks for EPUB instead. Copying a MOBI by USB cable still works on Kindles that read the format.
Can I convert ebooks bought from a store?
Only books without DRM. Store copy protection prevents any converter from reading the content, and removing it is not something this tool does.
Does the MOBI keep the table of contents?
Yes. Chapter headings and the EPUB's own contents list become the Kindle's table of contents, so Go To works on the device.
Where do I put the file on the Kindle?
Connect the Kindle to a computer by USB; it appears as a drive. Copy the .mobi file into the documents folder, eject the Kindle, and the book shows up in the library.
Choose the format by how the book travels
Check the route before you convert
MOBI is the right output only for the cable route to an old device. Pick by how the book reaches the reader:
- Send to Kindle by email, app or web: send the EPUB itself
- USB cable to a recent Kindle: convert to AZW3
- USB cable to an early Kindle or an old MOBI-only app: convert to MOBI
- Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books: keep the EPUB
If you are unsure which Kindle you have, the model name is in Settings → Device Info on the device. When in doubt, try AZW3 first: a Kindle that reads AZW3 shows a better-looking book, and one that does not will simply not list the file, in which case MOBI is the fallback.
Getting a good result on an old Kindle
Early Kindles have small, slow e-ink screens and little memory, so lighter books read better. The Kindle (basic) device profile sizes pages and images for that screen. Under Advanced settings you can also turn on Grayscale for images, which makes illustrated books smaller and avoids color images that the screen cannot show anyway.
Covers and contents deserve a check. With Cover on Keep cover, the EPUB's own cover becomes the thumbnail in the Kindle library; if a book has none, First image uses its first picture. The Table of contents option builds the chapter list that the Kindle's Go To menu shows, which is the main way to move around a long book on these devices.
Copy one book first and open it on the Kindle before converting a whole library. If chapters, images and the contents list look right, the rest will too.

You can convert up to 20 EPUB books at a time, each up to 95 MB, and each becomes its own .mobi file with the same name. Uploads are deleted after processing and the converted books 30 minutes later. The Ebook Converter handles every other target, including AZW3, PDF for printing and CBZ for comics, and PDF to EPUB turns a fixed-page PDF into a reflowable book first.
