Reflowable ebook
Also called EPUB · reflowable text
A book whose text has no fixed pages: the reading app wraps the lines to fit the screen and the font size you choose. Converting to PDF fixes those pages once, at the size you pick, so every reader and printer sees the same layout.

Why turn an ebook into a PDF

EPUB is the most common ebook format outside Amazon's store. Public domain libraries, independent authors, publishers' review copies and many universities hand out books as .epub files, and phones and e-readers open them well. Laptops, office printers and plenty of study tools do not. A PDF opens in every browser and every operating system's built-in viewer, so it is the easier copy to print, mark up in class or attach to an email.

Fixed pages also help when people need to talk about the same passage. In an ebook, page 40 on one reader is page 63 on another, because each app lays the text out differently. Once the book is a PDF, everyone has the same page 40, which is why reading groups, teachers and reviewers often ask for one.

What you give up is the flexibility. A PDF will not reflow on a small phone screen, the font size cannot be raised without zooming, and night mode in an ebook app does not apply. Keep the EPUB for reading on the go, and use the PDF where fixed pages matter.

EPUB

EPUB ebook

The open ebook standard first published by the IDPF in 2007 and now maintained by the W3C. Text reflows to fit any screen size, and the book is packaged with its images, styles and table of contents. Apple Books, Kobo and library apps read it, and current Kindle apps accept it through Send to Kindle.

Adobe's Portable Document Format from 1993, now an open ISO standard. It fixes text, images and layout so a page looks the same on every screen and printer, and it can carry forms, links and transparency. Every operating system and browser can open it, though editing the content is harder than in a word processor.

Why convertThe EPUB adapts its text to every screen; the PDF fixes it onto pages of one size. Convert when the book has to be printed, cited by page or opened on a computer with no ebook app, and keep the EPUB for reading on a phone or e-reader.

What carries over from the EPUB

An EPUB is a ZIP package of web pages, style sheets, pictures and fonts, plus a file that lists the reading order and the table of contents. The converter follows that reading order chapter by chapter, applies the book's own styles and lays the text out on A5 pages with the margins left as the book defines them. Headings, italics, block quotes, lists, tables and footnotes come through, and pictures are placed where they appear in the text.

The table of contents becomes the PDF's bookmark outline, and links inside the book, such as footnote references and cross-references, stay clickable. Embedded fonts are used when the book includes them; otherwise a standard book font is substituted and embedded in the PDF. Audio and video clips that some EPUB 3 books contain cannot play in a PDF and are left out.

Large books convert fine, but they make large PDFs when they are full of photographs, because every picture is kept at the resolution stored in the EPUB. If the result is too heavy to email, lower Image quality under Advanced settings and convert again, or run the PDF through Compress PDF. A text-only novel stays small either way. Up to 20 books can go into one batch, each with its own PDF and the original file name.

EPUB to PDF questions

Why can't my EPUB from an online bookstore be converted?

Most store-bought ebooks are locked with DRM, which encrypts the content so that only the store's own apps can open it. The converter cannot read an encrypted book, and removing DRM is not something this site does. Free and DRM-free EPUB files convert normally.

Why A5 and not A4?

An ebook is written to fill a small screen, so its lines are short and its pictures modest. A5 (148 × 210 mm) keeps a comfortable line length; on A4 the same text would stretch across a wide page with large margins of empty space. Pick A4 or Letter if you will print two pages per sheet or need a standard size.

Do chapters become PDF bookmarks?

Yes. The table of contents stored in the EPUB becomes the outline in the PDF reader's sidebar, so you can jump between chapters as you could in the ebook.

Will the page numbers match the printed edition?

No. An EPUB has no fixed pages, so the PDF gets its own page numbers from the chosen page size. Some EPUB 3 books carry a list of print page numbers, but the PDF layout is new and does not follow it.

Can I convert a fixed-layout EPUB, such as a comic or picture book?

Yes. Fixed-layout books already have pages, so each one becomes a PDF page at its own size. Leave Page size on Same as source for those to avoid adding margins.

Can I turn the PDF back into an EPUB?

Yes, with PDF to EPUB, although the text has to be pieced back together from fixed pages, so headings and paragraphs may need some tidying in the result.

Where the EPUB format comes from

From IDPF to W3C

  1. Specification

    IDPF EPUB 3.0

    Source
  2. Specification

    W3C Recommendation EPUB 3.3

    Source

EPUB was created by the International Digital Publishing Forum, which published EPUB 3.0 in 2011. The forum later merged into the W3C, and the current version, EPUB 3.3, became a W3C Recommendation in 2023. Because the format is built on HTML and CSS, its content is well described and converts predictably to a page format such as PDF.

Amazon's Kindle uses its own formats instead. If the book is meant for a Kindle rather than for print, EPUB to MOBI on the Ebook Converter page is the better route, because it keeps the text reflowable.

Choosing the right page size

The page size decides how the book feels on paper or on screen. Four choices cover nearly every case, and you can change it under Page size before converting. Margins follow the book's style sheet unless you set Margins under Page layout yourself.

A5 (default)
148 × 210 mm, close to a trade paperback. Comfortable line length for most novels and non-fiction.
A4 or Letter
Standard office paper. Best when you will print two pages per sheet, or punch and file the book.
Same as source
For fixed-layout EPUBs such as comics, cookbooks and picture books, whose pages already have a size.
A3
Rarely useful for books; choose it only for large-format art or map books meant to be printed big.
