No Mac needed: a .pages file becomes a PDF that Windows, Android and every browser open straight away.

A Mac document on a non-Mac computer

Pages is the word processor that comes free with every Mac, iPad and iPhone, and it saves in its own format with the .pages extension. Inside Apple's world that is never a problem. Outside it, it is: Windows, Android phones, Chromebooks and Microsoft Word cannot open a .pages file, and the file often shows up as an unknown type with no preview.

That is how most people land here. A teacher shares a worksheet written on an iPad, a landlord sends a lease typed on a MacBook, a classmate hands in group notes, and the attachment refuses to open. Converting it to PDF gives you a document you can read and print on whatever you have, without asking the sender to do anything again.

The PDF keeps the text, headings, pictures, tables and page layout of the document. Because Apple does not publish the file format, very elaborate layouts may differ slightly from what the sender sees, which is why the panel below also explains how to get a PDF straight from Pages when the copy has to be exact.

PAGES

Pages document

The native document format of Apple's Pages app on Mac, iPad and iPhone, first released in 2005. It keeps text, layout and images in an Apple package that other platforms cannot open directly. To share with Windows or Word users, the file is usually exported to DOCX or PDF.

Adobe's Portable Document Format from 1993, now an open ISO standard. It fixes text, images and layout so a page looks the same on every screen and printer, and it can carry forms, links and transparency. Every operating system and browser can open it, though editing the content is harder than in a word processor.

Why convertA .pages document opens only in Apple's own apps; the PDF opens on every computer and phone. Convert when you received the file on Windows or Android, or when it must go to someone who does not use Apple devices, and leave it as .pages while it is still being written.

Three ways to get a PDF

Which route is best depends on who has the file and what device they use. If you have the .pages file but no Apple device, this page is the quickest. If the person who wrote it is at hand, Pages can export a PDF itself, as described in Apple's Pages guide.

Asking the sender is not always practical. They may be away, the file may be old, or there may be dozens of documents to get through, such as a folder of school handouts. In those cases converting the files you already have is faster than waiting for new exports, and the results are close enough for reading and printing.

Upload the .pages file on any computer or phone. Best when you received the file and have no Apple device.

  • Works on Windows, Android and Linux
  • Up to 20 documents per batch
  • Letter or A4 pages

How to convert Pages to PDF

  1. Add the .pages file

Drop the document on the box above, or press Choose Files. If it arrived as a .zip, upload the .zip's .pages file after unpacking it.

  2. Check the paper size

Pages are set to Letter, the default paper in US copies of Pages. Pick A4 under Page size if the document was written for A4.

  3. Convert and download

Press Convert to PDF, then save the PDF or download several at once.

Pages to PDF questions

How do I open a .pages file on Windows?

Windows has no app for the Pages format. Convert it to PDF here to read or print it, or ask the sender to export a PDF or Word file from Pages. To edit it, the free Pages app for iCloud also runs in a browser on Windows with an Apple account.

Why does my .pages file show up as a folder or a ZIP?

A .pages document is a package: a folder of files that a Mac shows as one document. Sent through some email services or cloud drives, it arrives as a folder or a .zip. Unpack the .zip and upload the .pages item inside it.

Will the layout match what the sender sees on their Mac?

Usually closely, but not always exactly. Apple does not publish the Pages format, so complex layouts with text boxes, shapes or Apple-only fonts can shift. When an exact copy matters, ask the sender to export a PDF from Pages itself.

Can I convert a Pages file to Word instead?

Yes, if you want to edit it: the Document Converter turns .pages into .docx. Choose PDF when you only need to read, print or forward the document.

Does this work for Numbers and Keynote files?

Keynote presentations (.key) are accepted on this page too and become one slide per page. Numbers spreadsheets are not; export them from Numbers as Excel or PDF first.

Do I need an Apple account?

No. Upload the file, convert it and download the PDF. No Apple account, Mac or sign-up is required.

The same converter reads Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OpenDocument, EPUB and text files, as listed above. That helps when a document from a Mac arrives together with other attachments: drop them all in one batch and you get a PDF of each. Keynote presentations from Apple's slide app are on the list too.

Every file in a batch shares the same page settings, so if some documents use Letter and others A4, either convert them in two groups or keep Page size on Same as source, which uses each document's own paper size.

If you need to edit rather than read a document, a PDF is the wrong target. Turning the .pages file into a Word document keeps the text editable on Windows, and the Document Converter page does that from the same upload.

Letter, A4 and other settings

This page starts on Letter, the paper size that Pages uses for new documents in the United States. Documents written in Europe, Asia or Australia are usually A4 instead. If the PDF has large empty strips at the bottom or text running close to the edge, change Page size and convert again.

A few other options are worth knowing. Remove metadata drops the author name stored in the document, Open password under Security protects a private letter or lease, and PDF/A makes an archival copy for records you must keep. To join several converted documents into one file, use Merge PDF afterwards; for other document types, see Convert to PDF.
