A Keynote deck on a Windows computer
Keynote is Apple's presentation app, and it only runs on Mac, iPad and iPhone. When a colleague, a speaker or a client sends you their slides as a .key file, Windows has no program to open it, and double-clicking it does nothing useful. PowerPoint cannot read Keynote files either.
The cleanest fix happens on the sender's side: Keynote has an export command for PowerPoint, and Apple's guide walks through it. In practice that is not always possible. The speaker is travelling, the file came from an archive, or there are twenty decks from a conference to prepare by tomorrow morning.
Converting the .key file yourself closes that gap. You get a PPTX deck with the same slides, text, pictures and presenter notes, ready to edit in PowerPoint or to load on the laptop that runs the event.
Keynote and PowerPoint compared
KEY
Keynote presentation
The native format of Apple's Keynote, released in 2003 for presentations on Mac and iPad. It stores slides, builds and transitions in an Apple package. PowerPoint and Windows cannot open it directly, so decks are typically exported to PPTX or PDF before sharing.

- Vendor format
PPTX
PowerPoint presentation
PowerPoint's default format since 2007, based on Office Open XML. It holds slides with text, images, charts, transitions and animations, plus speaker notes. PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides and LibreOffice Impress can open it, with some effects rendered differently.

- Open standard
Why convertYou give up Keynote's own effects and fonts, which only Apple software renders exactly, and get the presentation format that every office suite and conference laptop opens. Convert in this direction when the deck has to be shown or edited outside Apple devices.
PowerPoint's PPTX format is part of the Office Open XML standard, so the converted deck also opens in Google Slides and LibreOffice Impress. Keynote and PowerPoint share most concepts, such as slides, layouts, text boxes, images, tables, charts and notes, and those come across directly. Some effects exist in only one of them, and those are rebuilt with the closest equivalent or kept as a still picture.
Slide size carries over as well. A widescreen Keynote deck becomes a 16:9 PowerPoint deck, and an older 4:3 deck stays 4:3, so nothing is stretched. Builds that reveal bullet points one by one are converted to PowerPoint animations where a matching effect exists; Keynote-only transitions are replaced with a simpler PowerPoint transition, so check any slide where the motion carries meaning.
When the deck will not cooperate
- What you see: Windows shows the .key file as an unknown file type.
- What to do: That is expected; Windows has no Keynote app. Convert the file here and open the PPTX instead.
- What you see: Text runs past the edge of a box after conversion.
- What to do: A Mac font was replaced. Install the font, or choose a similar common font for the affected slides.
- What you see: A video on a slide does not play.
- What to do: The video may use a format the PC cannot decode. Convert the clip with the Video Converter and insert the MP4 again.
- What you see: The upload is refused or the file seems empty.
- What to do: Some .key files are packages saved as folders. Compress the presentation into a ZIP on the Mac, or ask for a single-file copy.
Most decks need none of these fixes. Text-and-image slides, which are the bulk of business and lecture presentations, convert cleanly. It is worth one run-through in Presenter View before the talk, especially for decks with custom fonts or embedded media.
Charts deserve a quick look too. Keynote charts come across as PowerPoint charts where possible, but check that axis labels and colors still read well against the slide background.
Preparing a deck for an event laptop
Event organizers often collect slides from many speakers and play them all from one Windows machine. Converting every Keynote deck to PPTX in advance avoids surprises at the podium. Add up to 20 files in one batch, each up to 95 MB, and keep the speakers' original files as a backup.
If nothing on the slides needs to change, a PDF can be an even safer copy for the podium, because it shows every slide exactly as designed. Keep the PPTX for speakers who want to rehearse with notes or make last-minute edits, and use Convert to PDF for the fixed version.
Privacy and other conversions
Uploaded presentations are removed after processing and the PPTX files 30 minutes later, with no account to create. The Document Converter also converts Pages documents and Numbers spreadsheets, and PDF to PowerPoint helps when the only copy you have of a deck is a PDF.

Keynote to PowerPoint questions
Is there a Keynote app for Windows?
No. Keynote runs on Mac, iPad and iPhone. On a Windows PC the options are Keynote for iCloud in a browser, which needs an Apple Account, or converting the file to PowerPoint.
Should I ask the sender to export the deck instead?
If you can, yes. Keynote's own File → Export To → PowerPoint command, described in Apple's Keynote guide, knows every detail of the deck. This converter is for when the sender is unavailable or you received many files.
Are speaker notes carried over to PowerPoint?
Yes. Presenter notes from the Keynote file are placed in PowerPoint's notes pane, so you can read them in Presenter View.
What happens to fonts that only exist on a Mac?
PowerPoint replaces a missing font with one installed on your PC, which can change line breaks. Install the font if you have a license, or pick a common font for the affected slides.
Can I convert a password-protected Keynote file?
No. A password-protected presentation is encrypted, so it has to be opened in Keynote with the password and exported, or saved without the password first.
Does the PPTX work in Google Slides?
Yes. Upload it to Google Drive and open it with Google Slides. Slides imports PPTX files directly.
