Every PDF page comes back as one PowerPoint slide, with text you can edit and pictures you can move.

When a deck arrives as a PDF

Presentations are often shared as PDF because it opens anywhere and nobody can accidentally change it. That is convenient for the audience and frustrating for the next presenter: you cannot fix a number on slide 12, add your logo or write speaker notes without the original PowerPoint file, and the person who made it may not have it any more.

Converting the PDF gives you that working file back. Each page is rebuilt as a slide of the same size, with the headings and bullet points in text boxes and the photos and charts as separate pictures. You edit it like any deck, then present it or save it as a PDF again.

PDF pages become PPTX slides

Adobe's Portable Document Format from 1993, now an open ISO standard. It fixes text, images and layout so a page looks the same on every screen and printer, and it can carry forms, links and transparency. Every operating system and browser can open it, though editing the content is harder than in a word processor.

PPTX

PowerPoint presentation

PowerPoint's default format since 2007, based on Office Open XML. It holds slides with text, images, charts, transitions and animations, plus speaker notes. PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides and LibreOffice Impress can open it, with some effects rendered differently.

  • Open standard

Why convertYou lose the guarantee that every page looks exactly the same everywhere, and you gain slides you can edit, reorder and present with notes. Pick PowerPoint when the deck has a next version; keep the PDF for the final handout.

PPTX is the PowerPoint format introduced with Office 2007 and standardized, like DOCX and XLSX, in ECMA-376. Because the format is open, the converted deck also opens in Google Slides, Apple Keynote and LibreOffice Impress, not only in Microsoft's software.

This page uses Exact layout, which keeps each text box and picture at the position it had on the PDF page. That is the right choice for slides, where placement carries meaning. Flowing text would merge the content into running paragraphs, which suits documents better and is the default on the PDF to Word tool.

What carries over to the slides

Text and bullet points

Headings, body text and bullets become editable text boxes in the same position, size and color. Missing fonts are replaced by similar ones on your computer.

Photos, logos and charts

Pictures are kept as separate images you can resize or replace. A chart that was exported as a picture stays a picture; its data cannot be recovered from the PDF.

Backgrounds and shapes

Colored backgrounds, boxes and lines are rebuilt where the PDF describes them as shapes. Complex artwork may arrive as one image covering the slide.

Notes, animations and transitions

These are not in a PDF, so they cannot be recovered. Add them again in PowerPoint after the conversion.

The cleaner the PDF, the better the slides. A PDF exported straight from PowerPoint or Keynote holds real text and converts well. A PDF of a deck that was printed and scanned holds only pictures, so its text goes through OCR, and small print or low contrast can lead to errors you should check before presenting.

Tidying the deck after conversion

Plan a quick pass through the slides before you present. Start with the slide size: a deck exported at 16:9 comes back at 16:9, but a portrait handout gives portrait slides, and PowerPoint's Slide Size option can switch them to widescreen. After that, check titles that span two lines, since a missing font can make them wrap differently.

Text boxes on converted slides are separate objects rather than placeholders from a slide master. That keeps each slide looking like the PDF, but it also means a new theme will not restyle them automatically. If you want the deck to match your company template, copy the text into the template's own layouts, which is quicker than it sounds once the words are editable.

Finally, add what a PDF could never hold: speaker notes, transitions and links to videos or other slides. The converted deck behaves like any other PowerPoint file from that point on.

Converting a handout or a whole set of decks

You can convert up to 20 PDFs in one batch, which helps when a conference shares every talk as a separate file. Each PDF becomes its own PPTX, and you can download them one by one or together. Uploads are removed after processing and the decks 30 minutes later.

To combine pages from several PDFs into one deck, merge them first with the Merge PDF tool and convert the result. If the slides only need to be shown and not edited, consider keeping the PDF. For the reverse direction, PowerPoint files can be saved as PDF with the Convert to PDF tool.

PDF to PowerPoint questions

Does every PDF page become one slide?

Yes. Page 1 becomes slide 1, page 2 becomes slide 2, and so on. Use Selected pages under Advanced settings if you only need part of the document.

Can I edit the text on the converted slides?

Yes. Text is placed in ordinary text boxes that you can retype, restyle and move. On scanned pages the text is read with OCR first, so check names and numbers afterwards.

Will animations and transitions come back?

No. A PDF stores only the final look of each page, so the original animations, transitions and speaker notes are not in the file to recover. You can add new ones in PowerPoint.

Why are slides from a portrait PDF so tall?

The slide size follows the page size. A portrait A4 or Letter handout gives portrait slides; change the slide size in PowerPoint afterwards if you want a 16:9 deck and rearrange the content.

Does the PPTX open in Google Slides and Keynote?

Yes. Google Slides imports PPTX files directly from Drive, and Keynote opens them on a Mac, iPhone or iPad.

Is it better to present the PDF itself?

If nothing needs to change, presenting the PDF in full-screen mode works well and keeps the layout exact. Convert to PowerPoint when you need to edit, add notes, or merge the pages into another deck.
