2006

The year Ecma International published ECMA-376, the open standard behind every .docx file.

ISO adopted the same format as ISO/IEC 29500 two years later. Read the ECMA-376 page.

What a .docx file is

Rename a .docx file to .zip and you can open it like any archive. Inside are XML files for the text, the styles, the numbering and the page settings, plus a folder of images. That package design is called Office Open XML, and it replaced the older binary .doc format when Word 2007 arrived.

Because the structure is published, many programs read and write DOCX the same way. That is why portals for job applications, journals and university coursework so often ask for .docx specifically: their checkers and their reviewers can rely on it, while a PDF would need to be retyped before anyone could suggest edits.

A DOCX made from a PDF follows the same rules as one saved from Word. It has real paragraphs, styles you can change in one place, and tables you can sort or resize, so the people who receive it can work with it in whatever editor they use.

PDF document

Adobe's Portable Document Format from 1993, now an open ISO standard. It fixes text, images and layout so a page looks the same on every screen and printer, and it can carry forms, links and transparency. Every operating system and browser can open it, though editing the content is harder than in a word processor.

DOCX

Word document

Microsoft Word's default format since 2007, based on the openly published Office Open XML standard. It stores editable text with styles, tables, images and comments in a zipped package. Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages all open it, though complex layouts can shift slightly between programs.

Why convertA PDF records where things sit on the page, and DOCX records what they are: a heading, a list item, a table cell. Converting in this direction rebuilds that structure so the file can be reviewed, commented on and handed back as DOCX.

This page starts with Exact layout, which places each text block and picture where it was on the PDF page. The document looks like the original, which suits forms, letters with letterheads and files you will annotate rather than rewrite. If you plan heavier edits, the PDF to Word tool uses flowing paragraphs instead, and you can also switch modes here under Advanced settings.

Either mode keeps the page size and margins of the PDF, so a Letter or A4 original stays the same size in Word and prints the same way.

DOCX, DOC and Docs

DOCX
Also called Word document · Office Open XML document
The default Word file format since Word 2007: a ZIP package of XML parts, standardized as ECMA-376 and ISO/IEC 29500. Not to be confused with the binary .doc format used by Word 97 to 2003.

Three names get mixed up. DOC is the old binary format, which some government and legacy systems still request; the Document Converter can turn a DOCX into DOC if you meet one. DOCX is the modern format this page produces. Google Docs is an online editor rather than a file type, and it imports DOCX directly, which PDF to Google Docs explains step by step.

Checking the DOCX before you submit it

Upload forms that require DOCX usually check two things: the file extension and whether the file opens as a valid Office Open XML package. A converted file passes both, because it is written as a real package rather than a renamed PDF. Still, open it once before you send it, since that is the copy the other side will see.

Look at three places in particular. The first page should keep its letterhead or title block in position. Tables should still have the same number of rows and columns as in the PDF. Headers and page numbers should appear once per page and not as stray text in the body. If any of those look wrong, convert again with the other layout mode and compare the two results.

Some portals also limit the file size. If the DOCX is too large, the pictures are the usual cause, and turning off Keep images under Advanced settings gives a lighter file with the text intact.

Scans, pages and batch limits

A scanned PDF holds pictures of pages, so the converter runs OCR on any page without a text layer before writing the DOCX. You can convert all pages or a range such as 1-4, 9, and you can add up to 20 PDFs of up to 95 MB each to one batch.

Uploads are deleted after processing and the DOCX files 30 minutes later. Other targets, including Excel, PowerPoint and plain text, are listed on the PDF Converter page.

How to convert PDF to DOCX

  1. Upload the PDF

Drop the PDF on the box above or press Choose Files. You can add up to 20 files in one batch.

  2. Check the layout mode

DOCX output with Exact layout is preset. Switch to Flowing text under Advanced settings if you plan to rewrite large parts.

  3. Convert and download

Press Convert and save the .docx file. It opens in Word 2007 or newer and in any editor that reads Office Open XML.

PDF to DOCX questions

Is DOCX different from a Word document?

DOCX is the file format Word has saved by default since Word 2007. Older Word versions used the binary .doc format. When a form asks for a Word file today, DOCX is almost always what it means.

Why does this converter start in Exact layout mode?

People who search for a .docx file usually need to hand the document on, for example to a portal or a reviewer, and want it to look like the PDF. Exact layout keeps every block in its place. Flowing text is easier to rewrite but can move page breaks.

Can reviewers use Track Changes on the converted file?

Yes. The DOCX is a normal Word document, so Track Changes, comments and version history all work once it is open in Word or another editor that supports them.

Will a .docx from a PDF open on a Mac or in LibreOffice?

Yes. Apple Pages, LibreOffice Writer and Google Docs all open DOCX files. Small differences in fonts or spacing can appear when a font is not installed.

Why does the DOCX file look bigger than my PDF?

Pictures from the PDF are stored again inside the DOCX package, and some layout information is added. Turn off Keep images if you only need the text and want a smaller file.
