In short

  1. 1Every page of the DjVu becomes a PDF page, in the same order.
  2. 2Image quality starts at 75 to keep scanned books at a manageable size.
  3. 3A hidden OCR text layer, if the DjVu has one, keeps the PDF searchable.
  4. 4The PDF opens in browsers and phone viewers that cannot read DjVu.

Where DjVu files come from

DjVu was built at AT&T Labs in the late 1990s for one job: putting scanned paper online when connections were slow. It stores a page as layers, a crisp black-and-white mask for the text and a lower-resolution background for paper texture and pictures, which lets a whole scanned book fit in a few megabytes. Digital libraries, university archives and collectors of old manuals adopted it, and many of their files are still DjVu today.

The format never reached ordinary software, though. Browsers, office suites, phone gallery apps and the built-in viewers of Windows and macOS do not open it, so a DjVu file usually means hunting for a separate reader. Converting to PDF trades some of DjVu's compactness for a file that opens almost everywhere.

A PDF also fits the way people use documents now. It can be annotated in a phone app, highlighted on a tablet, sent to a printer from any computer and stored in cloud drives that show a preview. Students who receive course readings as DjVu and researchers who download old papers from digital archives are typical cases.

DJVU

DjVu document

A format AT&T Labs developed in 1998 for scanned books and documents. It separates text, background and images into layers and compresses each one differently, which keeps large scans manageable. Digital libraries use it, but most devices need a dedicated reader to open it.

PDF document

Adobe's Portable Document Format from 1993, now an open ISO standard. It fixes text, images and layout so a page looks the same on every screen and printer, and it can carry forms, links and transparency. Every operating system and browser can open it, though editing the content is harder than in a word processor.

Why convertDjVu packs a scanned book into a tiny file that few programs can open; PDF stores the same pages less compactly but opens in every browser and reader. Convert when the scan has to be read, printed or shared by people who will not install a DjVu viewer.

DjVu can store pages with lossless or lossy compression, often both in one file: lossless for the text mask, lossy for the background.

That layered design is why the size changes on conversion. A PDF reader expects each scanned page as one picture, so the converter flattens the layers into a single image per page and stores it with JPEG compression at the Image quality you choose. At the default of 75, printed text stays crisp while photos and paper texture lose detail you are unlikely to miss on screen.

Raise the quality to 90 or more for scans of maps, engravings or handwriting, where fine lines matter. Lower it if the PDF only needs to be readable on a phone, or if it has to fit an email attachment limit.

Making the PDF searchable

Some DjVu files carry an invisible text layer, created when the library ran character recognition on the scan. When it is there, the converter places that text behind each page image, so you can search, select and copy words in the PDF just as in the DjVu.

Many scans have no such layer, especially older or home-made ones. Try selecting a word in the converted PDF: if nothing highlights, the page is a picture only. Running it through OCR then adds the missing text, which also makes the book readable by screen readers and indexable by desktop search.

A clean text layer is worth the extra step for anything you will study or quote. It lets you search a 600-page manual for one part number, copy a paragraph into your notes without retyping it, and have the book read aloud by an accessibility tool. Scans with handwriting, unusual typefaces or heavy stains will still contain recognition mistakes, so check quoted passages against the page image.

Handling very large scans

A thick reference book can produce a PDF of several hundred megabytes at high quality. If the file is meant for reading rather than archiving, there are three easy ways to keep it light: keep Image quality at 75 or lower, convert only the chapters you need with Page range, or compress the finished PDF to a target size. The PDF converter tools and Compress PDF work on the result without converting again.

Keep the original DjVu as well. It remains the smallest copy of the scan, and if you ever need a sharper PDF you can convert it again at a higher quality instead of working from an already compressed file.

How to convert DjVu to PDF

  1. Add the DjVu files

Drop .djvu or .djv files on the box above, or press Choose Files. Multi-page documents are converted in full.

  2. Check the image quality

Image quality starts at 75, which keeps large scans at a sensible size. Raise it under Advanced settings for photos or fine print.

  3. Convert and download

Press Convert to PDF, then save each book or download the batch at once.

DjVu to PDF questions

Why is the PDF so much bigger than the DjVu file?

DjVu was designed to store scanned pages in very few bytes by splitting each page into a sharp text layer and a soft background. A PDF stores scans as ordinary images, which take more space. Lowering Image quality or running the result through the Compress PDF tool reduces the gap.

Can I search the text in the converted PDF?

Only if the DjVu file already had a hidden text layer from OCR. Many scans do not. If you cannot select words in the PDF, run it through the OCR PDF tool to add a searchable layer.

Will all pages of a long book be converted?

Yes. Every page in a multi-page DjVu becomes a page in the PDF, in the same order. To keep only some, choose Page range under Pages & content.

Do DjVu bookmarks carry over?

When the DjVu file includes an outline, it becomes the PDF's bookmark list. Many scans have no outline at all, in which case the PDF has none either.

Which apps open DjVu without converting?

Some dedicated readers do, but browsers and the built-in viewers on Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android generally do not. That gap is the main reason people convert DjVu files to PDF.

Can I convert several volumes at once?

Yes. Add up to 20 DjVu files of up to 95 MB each in one batch. Each volume becomes its own PDF with the original file name.
