The one-hour rule

Mountain and Pacific Time sit next to each other and follow the same US daylight saving schedule, so the difference between Denver and Los Angeles is one hour in both seasons. Pacific Time is UTC−8 (PST) in winter and UTC−7 (PDT) in summer; Mountain Time is UTC−7 (MST) and UTC−6 (MDT).

The US Department of Transportation sets the schedule: clocks move at 2:00 AM local time on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November. Since Denver changes an hour before Los Angeles in real time, the gap is briefly zero or two hours during that one hour.

  • 1 hDenver ahead of Los Angeles
  • 0 hPhoenix vs. Los Angeles, March–November
  • 1 hPhoenix vs. Los Angeles, November–March

Arizona reads like California in summer

Most of Arizona does not use daylight saving and stays on UTC−7 all year. In summer that is exactly Pacific Daylight Time, so Phoenix and Los Angeles show the same clock. In winter California falls back to UTC−8 and Phoenix is one hour ahead again.

This catches out many travelers and schedulers. A flight that leaves Phoenix at 10:00 AM and lands in Los Angeles an hour later arrives at 11:00 AM in summer but 10:00 AM in winter. The Navajo Nation is the exception within Arizona and follows Denver.

Do

  • Ask for a city when someone says Mountain Time, since Denver and Phoenix differ half the year.
  • Name the zone in invites: 10:00 AM MT / 9:00 AM PT.

Avoid

  • Assuming Arizona is always an hour ahead of California.
  • Writing MST for a Denver meeting in July; Denver is on MDT then.

The Denver, Seattle and Vancouver clocks show the live times. Going from Pacific to Mountain, use PST to MST.
