Neighbors on the same schedule
Pacific and Mountain Time follow the same federal daylight saving rule, overseen by the US Department of Transportation: clocks change at 2:00 AM local time on the second Sunday of March and on the first Sunday of November. Since Denver changes one hour earlier in real time, the gap is briefly 2 hours in March and zero in November, for that one hour only.
For everything else, the rule is simple: add one hour to a Los Angeles, Seattle or Las Vegas time to get the time in Denver, Salt Lake City or Albuquerque.
Arizona and other edge cases
Most of Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time, UTC−7, all year. During US daylight saving California is on PDT, which is also UTC−7, so Phoenix and Los Angeles read the same. In winter Phoenix is one hour ahead again. The Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona follows daylight saving like Denver.
Idaho and Oregon are split states: northern Idaho is on Pacific Time and a small corner of eastern Oregon is on Mountain Time. Check the town when a contact lives near those lines.
Simple parts
- Add one hour, all year, for Denver, Utah and New Mexico.
- Workdays overlap for seven hours.
- Both zones change on the same weekends.
Tricky parts
- Phoenix flips between 0 and 1 hour ahead every spring and fall.
- Split states make the state name unreliable.
- MST in a summer invite may mean Arizona or Denver; ask which.
The Denver, Seattle and Vancouver clocks show the live times. Starting from Denver, use MST to PST; for the Central zone, see PST to CST.
