Pacific Time against Japan Standard Time, this year and next: a 17-hour gap in the US winter and a 16-hour gap in the US summer.

Tomorrow in Tokyo

Japan is so far ahead that a Pacific afternoon or evening is already the next day there. A quick method: subtract 7 hours from a PST time, or 8 hours from a PDT time, and move to the next calendar day. 6:00 PM on Monday in Los Angeles becomes 11:00 AM on Tuesday in Tokyo in winter, and 10:00 AM on Tuesday in summer.

Only from midnight to 7:00 AM Pacific (8:00 AM in PDT season) do the two places share the same date.

Why only the US changes

Japan Standard Time is UTC+9, tied to the 135° east meridian and generated by NICT. Japan does not use daylight saving. Pacific Time moves between UTC−8 and UTC−7 at 2:00 AM on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November (US Department of Transportation).

Launches, streams and flights

Games, apps and shows from Japan often launch at a round hour in JST, which can land late at night in California. A midnight JST release is 7:00 AM the day before in Los Angeles on PST, or 8:00 AM on PDT. Watch the date in announcements as much as the time.

Flights cross the date line too: a nonstop that leaves Los Angeles around midday arrives in Tokyo in the afternoon of the next day. The Seattle and Vancouver clocks show the Pacific side; for Seoul, see PST to KST.

For regular calls with Japan

  • The usual slot is 4:00–6:00 PM Pacific, the next morning in Tokyo.
  • Fix the meeting in one zone and tell the other side when the US clocks change.
  • Monday morning in Tokyo is Sunday afternoon in California.
  • Starting from Tokyo? Use JST to PST.
