The US daylight saving rule applies in Washington: clocks go forward at 2:00 AM on the second Sunday in March and back at 2:00 AM on the first Sunday in November, as the US Department of Transportation's daylight saving page sets out.

Washington passed a law in 2019 to move to permanent daylight time, but federal law allows states to opt out of daylight saving, not to stay on it all year. Until Congress acts, Seattle keeps changing.

Seattle and Vancouver now split in winter

British Columbia adopted permanent UTC−7 in 2026 and did not turn its clocks back in November. From November to March, Vancouver is one hour ahead of Seattle; from March to November the two match again. Check the time for cross-border trips, ferries and calls.

Hours to add to the time in Seattle; a minus sign means the other city is behind

Gaps worked out for the coming year. In January Vancouver is an hour ahead of Seattle: British Columbia stays on UTC−7 all year.

With other US cities the gap is fixed: Denver is one hour ahead, Houston two and Washington, D.C., three. Europe moves: London is eight hours ahead for most of the year and seven in the short spells in March and around the start of November, when the US and UK change on different Sundays.

For the hour grid against the East Coast, open the PST to EST converter; against Japan, the PST to JST converter.

Daylight in Seattle varies a lot. At about 47.6° north, the city gets around 16 hours of daylight in late June and about 8.5 hours in late December, with December sunsets near 4:20 PM. That is why many Washingtonians favor permanent daylight time: an extra hour of evening light in winter.

Seattle time questions

Is Seattle on PST or PDT?

Check the clock label. Seattle uses PDT (UTC−7) from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November and PST (UTC−8) the rest of the year.

Is Seattle on the same time as Vancouver?

From March to November, yes. British Columbia stopped changing its clocks in 2026 and stays on UTC−7, so in winter Vancouver is one hour ahead of Seattle.

Is Seattle the same time as Los Angeles?

Yes. Washington, Oregon and California all use Pacific Time and change on the same dates.

What is the time difference between Seattle and New York?

Three hours, all year, with New York ahead.

Has Washington voted for permanent daylight time?

The state legislature passed a law in 2019 to keep daylight time all year, but it can take effect only if Congress allows it.
