Hours to add to the time in Perth; a minus sign means the other city is behind
Perth keeps UTC+8 all year, so every change in the table comes from the other city. The biggest one for Australians is the gap to the east coast: Sydney and Melbourne are two hours ahead in winter and three in summer, while Brisbane stays two hours ahead all year.
Western Australia's time is set by state law, the Standard Time Act, which fixes the offset at eight hours ahead of UTC. A change would need a new act of the state parliament, and since the last referendum no government has proposed one. Visitors from the east coast should simply remember to set their watches back by two or three hours.

- Not observed
Western Australia has tried daylight saving four times, most recently in a trial from December 2006 to March 2009. A referendum held in May 2009 rejected it, the fourth time Western Australians voted no. The NSW Government's daylight saving page lists Western Australia with Queensland and the Northern Territory as the places that keep standard time all year.
Perth shares its hour with Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Shanghai, which makes Asian business calls simple and east-coast Australian calls a little harder.
Working across Australia from Perth
A 9:00 AM start in Sydney is 7:00 AM in Perth in winter and 6:00 AM in summer. National broadcasts and markets set to eastern time can feel early in the west: the ASX opens at 10:00 AM Sydney time, which is 8:00 AM or 7:00 AM in Perth.
The Sydney clock shows the eastern side, and the Brisbane clock the one eastern city that also skips daylight saving.
Because Perth keeps one offset while the east coast changes, the gap to Sydney is the most common source of confusion in national business.
