What UTC is
- UTC
- Also called Coordinated Universal Time
- The world's reference time, kept from atomic clocks and coordinated by the BIPM. It never changes for summer. Time zones are defined as offsets from it, such as UTC−5 for EST.
In the US, NIST and the US Naval Observatory keep the national versions of UTC, and time.gov shows the official time for each US zone. Software, aviation and science use UTC because it does not jump forward or back. Weather reports and air traffic control often write it as Z or "Zulu", so 14:00Z is 14:00 UTC, which is 9:00 AM EST or 10:00 AM EDT in New York.

- +4 hEDT to UTC (Mar–Nov)

Turning Eastern deadlines into UTC
A deadline of 11:59 PM Eastern on December 31 is 04:59 UTC on January 1; the same deadline on July 31 is 03:59 UTC on August 1. Evenings in New York cross into the next UTC day from 7:00 PM EST or 8:00 PM EDT, so check the date as well as the hour when you post a global cut-off.
The reverse matters for servers. A cron job set to 13:00 UTC runs at 8:00 AM in New York in winter and 9:00 AM in summer. If it has to run at the same local time, schedule it in the America/New_York zone instead of UTC.

The switch dates come from the federal rule the US Department of Transportation oversees. For fixed GMT instead of UTC, EST to GMT shows the same numbers; for the reverse direction, try UTC to EST.
EST to UTC questions
How many hours do I add to Eastern Time to get UTC?
Five hours during EST (early November to mid-March) and four hours during EDT (mid-March to early November).
What is 3:00 PM EST in UTC?
20:00 UTC. During EDT, 3:00 PM in New York is 19:00 UTC.
What is the difference between EST and ET?
ET (Eastern Time) is the zone; EST is its winter offset (UTC−5) and EDT its summer offset (UTC−4). Writing ET avoids naming the wrong season.
Why did my scheduled job move by an hour?
If a job is set in UTC, it stays put while New York clocks change, so it runs one hour later on the East Coast clock after March and one hour earlier after November.
