Two gaps, set by New York

Japan Standard Time is UTC+9 and has been for decades; the IANA time zone database shows that Japan's last summer time ended in 1951. All the movement in the gap comes from the US, which switches on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November under the rules the US Department of Transportation oversees.

So Tokyo is 14 hours ahead of New York in the US winter and 13 hours ahead in the US summer. With a gap that large, the date in Tokyo is a day ahead for most of the New York day: from 10:00 AM EST or 11:00 AM EDT onward, Tokyo has already moved to tomorrow.

The evening call

Office hours in New York and Tokyo do not overlap at all. The usual choice is a New York evening call, which lands on the Tokyo morning: 7:00 PM Eastern is 9:00 AM in winter or 8:00 AM in summer. A New York team that wants to stay within the working day can take 8:00 AM, which is 10:00 PM or 9:00 PM in Tokyo, late but not impossible for a short call.

Recurring meetings booked in Tokyo time move by one hour for the New York side each March and November. If a weekly call is set for 9:00 AM JST, it sits at 7:00 PM EST in winter but 8:00 PM EDT in summer.

Japanese holidays to plan around

  • Marine Day in July
  • Respect for the Aged Day in September

The live Seoul clock shows the same time as Tokyo, since Korea is also UTC+9. Use JST to EST to convert from the Japanese side.
