Fixed GMT or London time?

This converter treats GMT as a fixed reference at UTC+0, the way pilots, shipping lines and many broadcasters use it. It is listed as Etc/GMT in the IANA time zone database and never changes for summer.

London is different. From the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October the UK uses British Summer Time, one hour ahead of GMT, as GOV.UK lists. For a call with someone in Britain, the London clock gives the local time there; for a UTC deadline or a log file, stay with this page.

The dates the gap moves

Because GMT itself never moves, the EST to GMT gap changes only when New York changes its clocks: on the second Sunday in March it drops from five hours to four, and on the first Sunday in November it goes back to five. Those two switches for this year and next are below. If you work with London rather than fixed GMT, the gap is four hours only for the few weeks in March and late October when the US and UK calendars do not match.
