Each Pacific hour with the GMT time in both US seasons. From 4:00 PM Pacific in winter (5:00 PM in summer), GMT is on the next day.

Only the Pacific side moves

GMT on this page is the fixed UTC+0 reference, the scale realized from atomic clocks and published by the BIPM. It never shifts. Pacific Time moves from UTC−8 to UTC−7 at 2:00 AM on the second Sunday of March and back at 2:00 AM on the first Sunday of November (US Department of Transportation).

So the gap is 8 hours for about four months and 7 hours for about eight. The list below gives the exact dates. A timestamp of 18:00 GMT, for example, is 10:00 AM in Los Angeles in January and 11:00 AM in July.

GMT versus the London clock

London is a different story, because the UK also has summer time. The UK goes to BST on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October (GOV.UK). When both California and the UK are in summer time, London is 8 hours ahead, the same as in winter.

The gap drops to 7 hours only while the US is on summer time and the UK is not: from the second to the last Sunday of March, and from the last Sunday of October to the first Sunday of November. For live UK times, use the London clock.

Fixed GMT or UK time?

Before you convert, ask what the other person means by GMT.

  • Logs, aviation and satellite data: fixed GMT, use this page or PST to UTC.
  • A meeting in London: UK time, which is BST in summer.
  • Mixed messages: ask for the city.

PST to GMT questions

How many hours ahead of Pacific Time is GMT?

GMT is 8 hours ahead of PST, from early November to mid-March, and 7 hours ahead of PDT for the rest of the year.

What is 9:00 AM PST in GMT?

9:00 AM PST is 5:00 PM GMT. 9:00 AM PDT is 4:00 PM GMT.

How many hours ahead of Los Angeles is London?

8 hours for most of the year, because both cities use summer time. For about three weeks in March and one week around early November, the gap is 7 hours.

Can I treat GMT and UTC as the same here?

For converting clock times, yes. Both read the same and neither has daylight saving.

Why is London not always GMT?

The UK uses GMT only in winter. From the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October it is on British Summer Time, GMT+1.
