Coast-to-coast timing

Pacific Time is UTC−8 (PST) and UTC−7 (PDT); Eastern Time is UTC−5 (EST) and UTC−4 (EDT). Under the schedule overseen by the US Department of Transportation, both move at 2:00 AM local time on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, so the gap never changes in practice.

Many US schedules are written in Eastern Time first. Stock markets open at 9:30 AM ET, which is 6:30 AM in California. National live broadcasts set for 8:00 PM ET start at 5:00 PM Pacific unless the network delays them for the West Coast.

Working across the country

A 9-to-5 day on each coast leaves five shared hours, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM Pacific. East Coast teams who want a reply the same day should send requests before 2:00 PM Eastern, while Los Angeles is still in its morning.

Flights work the other way round: a five-hour nonstop from Los Angeles leaving at 8:00 AM lands in New York around 4:00 PM local time. The Seattle, Vancouver, Washington, DC and Toronto clocks show both coasts.

Do

  • Write ET and PT in national invites; they are correct in both seasons.
  • Put shared meetings between noon and 5:00 PM Eastern.

Avoid

  • Writing PST or EST in July; the coasts are on PDT and EDT then.
  • Booking a 9:00 AM Eastern call for a West Coast team; it is 6:00 AM for them.

Going the other way, use EST to PST; for Chicago, PST to CST.
