GMT, as used on this page, is the fixed UTC+0 time with no summer adjustment, listed as Etc/GMT in the IANA time zone database. So the only changes come from New York, which moves forward at 2:00 AM on the second Sunday in March and back at 2:00 AM on the first Sunday in November. London time is a different question

If you want the gap between London and New York rather than between GMT and New York, both sides move. The UK switches to BST on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October, as GOV.UK lists. For most of the year that keeps London five hours ahead of New York.

The exceptions are the weeks between the US and UK switch dates. From mid-March until late March, and from late October until early November, London is only four hours ahead. A weekly 3:00 PM London call lands at 10:00 AM in New York most of the year but 11:00 AM in those weeks.

Do

  • Use fixed GMT or UTC for logs, flight plans and global deadlines.
  • Use the live clock for London for meetings with people in the UK.

Avoid

  • Writing 'GMT' for a London meeting in July. London is on BST then, one hour ahead of GMT.
  • Assuming the London–New York gap is always five hours in March.
