Eight hours, or seven in summer
Pacific Standard Time is UTC−8 and Pacific Daylight Time is UTC−7. GMT here is the fixed UTC+0 reference, Etc/GMT in the IANA time zone database, so the gap is eight hours in the US winter and seven in the US summer. The West Coast moves forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November, the dates set out by the US Department of Transportation.
With a gap that large, the GMT morning is the West Coast night. Anything before 08:00 GMT in winter, or 07:00 GMT in summer, is still the previous day in Los Angeles.

The narrow UK–California window
If you work with people in the UK, both clocks move: London goes to BST on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October. For most of the year London is eight hours ahead of Los Angeles, and seven hours for a few weeks in March and late October.
That leaves almost no shared office time. 8:00 AM in San Francisco is 4:00 PM in London, so the usual slot is the first hour of the California day. Anything after 10:00 AM Pacific reaches the UK after 6:00 PM.

GMT to PST questions
How many hours behind GMT is California?
Eight hours during PST (early November to mid-March) and seven hours during PDT (mid-March to early November).
What is 17:00 GMT in Los Angeles?
9:00 AM PST in winter, or 10:00 AM PDT in summer.
What is midnight GMT on the West Coast?
4:00 PM the previous day during PST, or 5:00 PM the previous day during PDT.

Only from March to November. British Columbia stopped changing its clocks in 2026 and stays on UTC−7, so in winter Vancouver is an hour ahead of Seattle and the PST result here does not apply there.
