Nine hours, sometimes eight
In winter Central Europe is on CET (UTC+1) and California on PST (UTC−8): nine hours apart. In summer both move forward one hour, CEST (UTC+2) and PDT (UTC−7), and the gap is still nine hours.
The trouble is the timing. The US moves forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November, as the US Department of Transportation sets out. The EU moves on the last Sundays of March and October. For the weeks between those dates the gap is eight hours.

Living with almost no overlap
Pros
- An early Pacific call (8:00 AM) reaches Europe before 6:00 PM
- European work done in the day is ready when California logs on
- Written hand-offs replace most live meetings
Cons
- A single slow reply costs a full day
- Meetings after 9:00 AM Pacific fall in the European evening
- Friday afternoon in California is Saturday morning in Europe
Here is a worked example. A product team in Munich wants a weekly call with engineers in San Jose. At 5:30 PM in Munich it is 8:30 AM in San Jose during the nine-hour weeks, and 9:30 AM during the eight-hour weeks in March and late October. Booking the call at 8:30 AM Pacific keeps it before 6:30 PM in Germany all year.
Teams that make this pair work tend to agree on one fixed overlap slot, write the time in both zones and keep it short. The rest of the day runs on async notes. Compare the live Amsterdam and Vancouver clocks to see where each side is now.
If your European contact is in London or Lisbon rather than on the continent, the gap is one hour smaller: try GMT to PST.
CET to PST questions
How many hours ahead of California is Central Europe?
Nine hours for most of the year. In the weeks between the US and EU clock changes, in March and around the end of October, it is eight hours.
What is 6:00 PM in Amsterdam in San Francisco?
9:00 AM the same day at the usual nine-hour gap, or 10:00 AM during the eight-hour weeks.
What is PDT?
Pacific Daylight Time, UTC−7, which the US West Coast uses from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. In winter it is on PST, UTC−8.
Can a Berlin office and a Seattle office share a working day?
Barely. The only shared window is roughly 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM in Berlin, which is 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM in Seattle.
