The 9-hour and 8-hour stretches, this year and next. The short 8-hour rows are the ones that break recurring meetings.

Nine hours, with two short exceptions

Pacific Time is UTC−8 in winter and UTC−7 in summer. Central European Time is UTC+1 in winter and, as CEST, UTC+2 in summer. When both sides are in the same season, the gap is 9 hours.

The seasons do not change at the same time. The US switches on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November (US Department of Transportation). The EU switches on the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October (Directive 2000/84/EC). Between those dates the gap is 8 hours: about three weeks in spring and one week in autumn.

A narrow window for live calls

When Los Angeles starts work at 8:00 AM, Paris is at 5:00 PM and finishing its day. That leaves an hour, sometimes two, of overlap. Many teams instead hand work over: Europe works during the California night and posts updates that Los Angeles reads in the morning.

During the 8-hour weeks the overlap grows by an hour, which is why a meeting that felt fine in February can seem late for Europe in April. The Paris, Berlin and Seattle clocks show the times now.

Do

  • Book calls at 8:00 AM Pacific and confirm the European time after each March and October change.
  • Use CET/CEST with the city name in the invite.

Avoid

  • Assuming the US and Europe change clocks on the same weekend.
  • Using CET for the UK, Ireland or Portugal; they are an hour behind.

For New York, see CET to EST; for the reverse direction, CET to PST.

PST to CET questions

How many hours ahead of Los Angeles are Paris and Berlin?

Central Europe is 9 hours ahead of California for most of the year, and 8 hours ahead for about three weeks in March and one week around the start of November.

What is 8:00 AM Pacific in Berlin?

It is 5:00 PM in Berlin when the gap is 9 hours, and 4:00 PM during the weeks with an 8-hour gap.

Why is the gap 8 hours in March?

The US moves to daylight time on the second Sunday of March, but Europe waits until the last Sunday of March. For those weeks only California is on summer time.

When can Los Angeles and Paris meet in office hours?

Only in the early Pacific morning. 8:00–9:00 AM in Los Angeles is 5:00–6:00 PM in Paris on most dates.

Is the UK in the CET zone?

No. London is one hour behind Paris, so it is 8 hours ahead of Los Angeles on most dates. Use the London clock for UK times.
