From Honolulu to the West Coast

Two hours while California is on PST, three while it is on PDT.

Why the gap changes when Hawaii does not

Hawaii is one of two states, with most of Arizona, that do not use daylight saving. Federal law lets a state stay on standard time all year, as the US Department of Transportation explains, and close to the equator there is little daylight to gain in summer.

So Honolulu sits at UTC−10 every day. The West Coast moves from PST (UTC−8) to PDT (UTC−7) on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November, and the gap grows from two hours to three for those eight months.

Flights, broadcasts and calls

Flights from Honolulu to the West Coast take about five to six hours, and most eastbound evening flights land the next morning. An 11:00 PM departure from Honolulu with a 5 h 30 min flight lands at 6:30 AM in Los Angeles in winter, or 7:30 AM in summer, once the clock gap is added.

Live mainland events reach Hawaii early. A game starting at 7:00 PM Pacific begins at 5:00 PM in Honolulu in winter and 4:00 PM in summer. For business calls, the island morning is the mainland late morning, so 8:00 AM in Honolulu is 10:00 AM or 11:00 AM in San Francisco.

HST to PST questions

How many hours ahead of Hawaii is California?

Two hours from early November to mid-March (PST) and three hours from mid-March to early November (PDT).

What is 6:00 PM in Honolulu in Los Angeles?

8:00 PM in winter and 9:00 PM in summer.

Why does Honolulu skip the March clock change?

No. Hawaii stays on HST, UTC−10, all year. The state chose not to adopt daylight saving under the Uniform Time Act.

Is Alaska on Hawaii time?

Partly. The western Aleutian Islands use Hawaii–Aleutian Time, UTC−10, but unlike Hawaii they move to daylight time in summer. The rest of Alaska uses Alaska Time, UTC−9, with daylight saving.
