Why the gap shrinks in March

Until 2019 Brazil moved its clocks forward in the southern summer, which made the gap to New York swing between one and three hours. A federal decree that year ended daylight saving, and the IANA time zone database has kept Brasília Time at UTC−3 since then.

So today the only changes come from the United States. Clocks in New York go forward on the second Sunday in March, cutting the gap to one hour, and back on the first Sunday in November, restoring two hours. The US Department of Transportation oversees those dates.

Other zones inside Brazil

Manaus and most of Amazonas

UTC−4, one hour behind São Paulo. That matches EDT in the northern summer and is one hour ahead of EST in winter.

Acre and western Amazonas

UTC−5, the same as New York in winter and one hour behind it in summer.

Fernando de Noronha

UTC−2, one hour ahead of the mainland and three hours ahead of EST.

For daily work this means São Paulo and New York share almost the whole office day. A 9:00 AM stand-up in New York is 11:00 AM in São Paulo in January and 10:00 AM in July. Brazilian teams that schedule calls with US clients often keep a note of the two US switch dates so that recurring meetings do not drift.
