Centimeters to Meters
Enter centimeters to read meters. There are 100 cm in a meter, so the converter divides by 100 and the result is always exact.
Formula: m = cm × 0.01
There are 100 centimeters in a meter, so dividing by 100 is all it takes: 175 cm is 1.75 m.

Moving the decimal point
Dividing by 100 moves the decimal point two places to the left. 250 cm becomes 2.50 m, 37 cm becomes 0.37 m, and 4 cm becomes 0.04 m; add zeros in front when there are not enough digits.
Height is where most people meet this. European ID cards and medical forms often write 1.68 m where a US form says 168 cm or 5 ft 6 in. For the imperial figure, use cm to feet or m to feet.
Going the other way, multiply by 100: 0.8 m is 80 cm, and 1.05 m is 105 cm.
Do
- Write 0.45 m with the leading zero, so the decimal point is not missed.
- Keep one unit across a whole list of measurements.
Avoid
- Mixing 1.5 m and 150 without a unit in the same table.
- Typing 1 m 75 cm into a spreadsheet. Enter 1.75 so the cell works in formulas.
Centimeters in building and sewing
Builders in metric countries usually skip centimeters and work in millimeters, so a 2.4 m board is written 2400 on a drawing. Tailors and fabric shops do the opposite and quote everything in centimeters. When a plan and a shopping list disagree, cm to mm and this page cover both directions.
Both units are part of the same decimal ladder defined in the BIPM SI Brochure, so no conversion between them ever needs rounding.
In spreadsheets, store lengths in one unit and convert with a formula column, for example =A2/100 for meters. A later change of unit is then one edit rather than a whole column retyped, and the original measurements stay untouched.
