Kilometers in one meter
Divide meters by 1,000, or move the decimal point three places left: 4,750 m is 4.75 km.

Runs, walks and elevations
Fitness apps log laps in meters and then total them in kilometers. A 400 m track lap is 0.4 km, and 7,500 steps of 0.7 m each cover about 5.25 km. Mountain heights stay in meters by convention: Mont Blanc is roughly 4,800 m, which you would rarely see written as 4.8 km.
Elevation gain on hiking routes is also given in meters: a climb of 1,200 m is 1.2 km of vertical height, or about 3,937 ft.
Three places to the left
- 75 m → 0.075 km (add zeros in front)
- 850 m → 0.85 km
- 1,200 m → 1.2 km
- 12,000 m → 12 km
Choosing the unit for a distance
Below a kilometer, meters are clearer: 650 m reads better than 0.65 km in directions or on a sign. Above that, kilometers avoid long numbers. Road signs in metric countries follow the same habit and switch to meters only for the last stretch before an exit.
For the reverse of this page, use km to m; when the reader thinks in imperial units, m to feet or km to miles finishes the job.
Keep the precision of the original when you convert. 1,250 m measured to the meter is 1.250 km, while a rough estimate of 1,200 m should stay 1.2 km. Running apps usually show distances to two decimals, enough for a split time per kilometer, and charts read better when every value uses the same unit.
In the other direction, a reading such as 3.4 km on a sign means 3,400 m, so a 400 m track would need eight and a half laps to match it.
Meters to km questions
How many kilometers is 10,000 meters?
10,000 ÷ 1,000 = 10 km.
What is 500 m in km?
500 m is 0.5 km, half a kilometer.
How do I convert 2,345 m to km?
Move the decimal point three places left: 2,345 m is 2.345 km.
Why are mountain heights given in meters?
Heights of a few thousand meters are easy to read as whole numbers, and surveys report them that way. Writing 4.8 km for a peak is correct but unusual.
