Decimal minutes or minutes and seconds
A result like 2.5 min means two and a half minutes, which is 2 min 30 s, not 2 min 50 s. To get the seconds back, multiply the decimal part by 60: 200 s is 3.333 min, so three whole minutes and 0.333 × 60 = 20 s.
Stopwatches, race results and video players show m:ss, so 200 s appears as 3:20.
Running pace is another case: a pace of 5:30 per kilometer is 5.5 minutes, or 330 seconds, per kilometer.
Do
- Write lap and race times as m:ss (4:05) when people will read them.
- Use decimal minutes for averages and charts, where the numbers must add up.
Avoid
- Typing 4.05 into a spreadsheet for 4 min 5 s. It means 4 min 3 s.
- Rounding each time before you average them. Round the final figure instead.
How long a second is
The second is the SI base unit of time, defined by the frequency of a cesium-133 transition: exactly 9,192,631,770 cycles (BIPM SI Brochure). A minute is 60 of them. Coordinated Universal Time has occasionally inserted a leap second, making one minute 61 seconds long, but the CGPM voted in 2022 to end that practice by 2035.
For longer spans, minutes to hours continues the same base-60 steps, and the summer countdown shows days, hours, minutes and seconds ticking at once.
Large second counts usually come from software, logs and APIs, which store durations in seconds or milliseconds. A day has 86,400 seconds and a week 604,800, so a value like 7,200 is simply 120 minutes, two hours.
Microwave timers and cooking apps take m:ss too, so 150 seconds is entered as 2:30.
