Decimal hours on timesheets
Payroll and billing software usually wants decimal hours, but clocks show hours and minutes. Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the whole hours: 7 h 24 min is 7 + 24/60 = 7.4 h. Going back, multiply the decimal part by 60: 6.85 h is 6 h 51 min.
Watch for a common slip: 1.30 h is not an hour and thirty minutes. It is 1 h 18 min; an hour and a half is 1.5 h.
Some payroll systems round to the nearest tenth or quarter hour, so 7 h 52 min may be recorded as 7.9 h or 7.75 h depending on the rule. Check which rounding applies before comparing a payslip with your own log.
Minute values worth knowing
- 6 min = 0.1 h
- 15 min = 0.25 h
- 20 min = 0.333 h
- 40 min = 0.667 h
- 75 min = 1.25 h
Hours, days and longer spans
Sixty minutes to the hour comes from the base-60 counting of ancient Babylonian astronomy, and the minute and hour are both accepted for use with the SI (BIPM SI Brochure).
For spans of days or weeks, the days between dates calculator counts calendar days, and seconds to minutes handles shorter times.
Video and audio lengths are another common case. A 135-minute film runs 2.25 h, or 2 h 15 min, and a 47-minute podcast is 0.783 h. When adding many short durations, total the minutes first and divide once at the end; converting each item separately invites rounding errors.
