Yards to Meters
Type yards to get meters. The yard is exactly 0.9144 m, so 100 yd is 91.44 m and nothing is rounded along the way.
Formula: m = yd × 0.9144
- Yard
- Also called yd · 3 feet · 36 inches
- A US and imperial length of exactly 0.9144 m, fixed by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement. Multiply yards by 0.9144 to get meters.

Sports fields and swimming pools
An American football field is 100 yd between the goal lines, which is 91.44 m. Golf hole lengths are given in yards in the US and UK, so a 400 yd par 4 is 365.76 m. Some pools are 25 yd long instead of 25 m; the yard pool is 22.86 m, so times from the two are not directly comparable.
Track and field moved from yards to meters decades ago, so old records such as the 100-yard dash, 91.44 m, cannot be compared directly with 100 m times.
Short-course yards are not meters
A 25 yd pool is about 2.1 m shorter than a 25 m pool. Over a 1,650 yd swim that difference adds up to more than 140 m, so converted times need an adjustment, not just a change of unit.
Fabric and garden lengths
Fabric, ribbon and turf are often sold by the yard in the US and by the meter elsewhere. A meter is about 1.094 yd, roughly 3.4 in longer, so ordering 5 yd where a pattern asks for 5 m leaves you about 43 cm short.
The yard definition is listed in NIST Handbook 44. For lengths under a yard, feet to cm and inches to feet are easier to work with.
Garden supplies follow the same pattern: hoses, fencing and edging may be sold in feet or yards in the US. A 50 ft hose is 16.67 yd, which is 15.24 m. When you buy material by length, round up rather than to the nearest value, since a short piece cannot be stretched.
Yards to meters questions
How many meters is 100 yards?
100 yd is exactly 91.44 m.
How many yards are in a meter?
One meter is 1.0936 yd, so a meter is about a tenth longer than a yard.
How do I convert meters back to yards?
Divide by 0.9144. 50 m is 54.68 yd.
Why is a yard exactly 0.9144 m?
The US, UK and other Commonwealth countries agreed on that value in 1959 so that their yards would match. It is now a definition, not a measurement.
