Three different tons

The short ton and the long ton are both built from the pound, so their metric values follow from the exact 0.45359237 kg pound. The short ton is about 9% lighter than a metric ton and the long ton about 1.6% heavier, so a figure quoted only as tons can be off by nearly a tenth if you guess the wrong one.
US truck weights, air conditioner ratings in tons of cooling and much American trade data use short tons. UK shipping and older British records use long tons. International freight, steel and most science work in metric tons, which is the unit this converter uses.
Check the unit on any load limit
Bridge signs, lifting gear and trailer plates may use any of the three tons depending on the country. When the difference decides whether a load is safe, look for the kilogram or pound figure.
Tons in everyday terms
A small car weighs a little over 1 t, a loaded city bus around 15 to 18 t, and a full 40-foot shipping container can top 30 t. Carbon footprints are given in metric tons of CO2 as well, so an annual figure of 4 t means 4,000 kg of the gas.
For weights in pounds, kg to lbs turns the kilogram result into US units, and lbs to kg does the reverse.
