Pounds and ounces from a decimal result
Scales in the US often show weight as pounds and ounces rather than decimal pounds. Take the whole pounds first, then multiply the leftover fraction by 16 for ounces. 3.5 kg is 7.716 lb; 0.716 × 16 is about 11.5, so the reading is 7 lb 11.5 oz. Hospitals use this to tell parents a newborn's weight in the units they grew up with.
Gyms mix both systems too. Olympic barbells weigh 20 kg, which is 44.09 lb, while many US bars are made at 45 lb. Plates in kilograms are usually color-coded; a red 25 kg plate is about 55.1 lb.
Medical forms in the US often ask for weight in pounds even when a clinic scale reads kilograms, and pet food, luggage and moving quotes follow the same habit. Keep one decimal place in pounds; going further adds digits that the scale never measured.
Weight limits often round in your disfavor
An airline that lists 23 kg or 50 lb may enforce whichever figure its scales show. At the check-in desk, 50.5 lb is still over a 50 lb limit even though it is under 23 kg.
Why one pound is 0.45359237 kg
Until 1959 the US and the UK each had their own pound, differing in the sixth digit. The international yard and pound agreement set both to exactly 0.45359237 kg, the value every conversion on this page uses. NIST Special Publication 811 lists it as an exact factor.
