Reading US package weights in grams
American labels give net weight in ounces and pounds first, often followed by grams in parentheses. When only ounces appear, multiply by 28.35 for a figure that is accurate to well under a gram for kitchen amounts: a 6 oz yogurt is about 170 g, a 14.5 oz can of tomatoes about 411 g.
For a quick mental estimate, 30 g per ounce is close enough for cooking and is easy to multiply. It runs about 6% high, so do not use it for medicine, postage or anything sold by weight.
Recipes from the US that list ounces for ingredients like chocolate, cheese and pasta mean weight ounces, not fluid ounces. A box of pasta labeled 16 oz holds about 454 g, close to the 500 g packs sold in Europe.
