Remainders, not decimals
Dividing by 16 rarely gives a round number, and the decimal is not the same as the leftover ounces. 38 oz divided by 16 is 2.375 lb. The 0.375 is three eighths of a pound, which is 6 oz, so the reading is 2 lb 6 oz, not 2 lb 3.75 oz. To get the remainder directly, subtract 16 for each whole pound: 38 − 32 = 6.
Bulk food bins, deli counters and some recipes work in ounces up to a few pounds, so this split comes up often at the grocery store. Price per pound labels hide the same math: a 12 oz pack at $6 is $8 per pound.
Baby weights are another place where ounces add up. A newborn at 120 oz weighs 7.5 lb, which hospitals write as 7 lb 8 oz. Tracking growth in ounces makes small daily gains easier to see.
Avoirdupois ounce
The ounce for food, parcels and people: 28.349523125 g, 16 to the pound.
Troy ounce
Used for gold, silver and platinum: 31.1034768 g, 12 to the troy pound.
Fluid ounce
A volume, not a weight. The US fluid ounce is about 29.57 mL; the imperial one is about 28.41 mL.
Pounds for heavier items
Once a weight passes a few pounds, the pound reading is easier to compare, and it maps onto the kilogram with a single factor. The Lbs to kg converter takes the result into metric, and lbs to oz brings it back to ounces when a label needs them.

How many pounds is 20 oz?
1.25 lb, or 1 lb 4 oz.
