The pint in bars, dairies and recipes
In the United States the pint is a kitchen and dairy unit: cream, ice cream and milk come in pints, and recipes call for a pint of stock or berries. In the UK and Ireland the pint is the legal measure for draft beer and cider and for returnable milk bottles, and it is the larger imperial pint.
Draft beer in the US is often poured in a 16 oz glass called a pint, which matches the US pint of 473 mL. A UK pint glass holds 568 mL, so the same name covers two noticeably different drinks.
Recipes from the UK that call for a pint of milk or stock mean the imperial pint, 568 mL. Using a US pint for those recipes gives about 95 mL less liquid, enough to make a batter or a sauce noticeably thicker.

Larger volumes read better in quarts to L, and single servings in fl oz to mL.
