Ounces on drinks and bottles
American drink labels list fluid ounces first and milliliters second. A 12 fl oz can is 355 mL, a 16.9 fl oz water bottle is 500 mL, and a 25.4 fl oz wine bottle is the standard 750 mL. Seeing the round metric figure next to an odd ounce figure tells you the product was filled to a metric size and labeled in US units afterward.
Cosmetics and medicine bottles follow the same pattern. A travel bottle sold as 3.4 fl oz holds 100 mL, the limit many airports set for each container in a cabin bag.
US and UK fluid ounces
The US fluid ounce comes from the US gallon of 231 cubic inches, which NIST lists in Handbook 44, Appendix C. The UK fluid ounce is one twentieth of the imperial pint, defined in law through the gallon of 4.54609 L. Older British recipes and some UK-made products use the smaller ounce, so check where a recipe was written before converting.
For larger amounts, ml to cups and pints to mL use the same US system, and ml to fl oz reverses this page.
Baby bottles are a common case too: most carry both scales, with marks in fluid ounces on one side and milliliters on the other.

Fl oz to mL questions
What does a single US fluid ounce hold in milliliters?
29.5735295625 mL for the US fluid ounce. The UK imperial fluid ounce is smaller, 28.4130625 mL.
How many milliliters are in 12 fl oz?
About 354.9 mL, which is why a US soda can is labeled 355 mL.
What is 3.4 fl oz in mL?
About 100.5 mL. Airport liquid limits are often written as 3.4 oz or 100 mL for that reason.
Why is the US fluid ounce larger than the UK one?
The US ounce is one 128th of a US gallon, and the UK ounce one 160th of an imperial gallon. The imperial gallon is bigger, but it is split into more ounces, so each UK ounce ends up about 4% smaller.
