Multiplying by 1,000 without a calculator
Shift the decimal point three places to the right and fill any gap with zeros. 3.2 kg becomes 3,200 g, 0.075 kg becomes 75 g, and 12 kg becomes 12,000 g. The digits never change, only their place, which is the whole point of a decimal system.
This is most useful when a recipe or a diet plan works in grams but your scale or the package shows kilograms. A 1.2 kg chicken is 1,200 g, so a roasting time given per 500 g comes out at about two and a half portions of that time.
Shops that sell by weight often price per kilogram but weigh to the gram, so the receipt shows both. A cheese priced at 24 per kilogram and cut at 180 g costs 24 × 0.18, which is 4.32 in the same currency.
Weights worth knowing by heart
- 10.1 kg = 100 g
- 20.25 kg = 250 g
- 30.5 kg = 500 g
- 41.5 kg = 1,500 g
- 52.2 kg = 2,200 g
Kitchen scales and their limits
A typical kitchen scale reads to 1 g and tops out around 5 kg, so anything you weigh on it fits in four digits of grams. Bathroom scales usually step in 100 g, and luggage scales often in 50 g or 100 g, which is why a suitcase reading of 22.9 kg cannot tell you whether you are at 22,850 or 22,949 g.

Mass and weight
Strictly, the kilogram measures mass and a scale measures the force of gravity on it. On Earth the two track each other closely enough that everyday use treats them as the same, and so does this page.

Kg to grams questions
How many grams is 0.5 kg?
500 g. Half a kilogram is half of 1,000 grams.
What is 1.25 kg in grams?
1,250 g. Multiply by 1,000, or shift the decimal point three places right.
How many grams is a quarter kilo?
250 g. Many shops and recipes still say a quarter kilo or half a kilo for 250 g and 500 g.
Why do food labels list grams instead of kilograms?
Grams keep small amounts readable. A serving of 30 g is easier to compare than 0.03 kg, so labels give nutrients per 100 g or per serving in grams.
