Megabits to Megabytes
Enter megabits and read megabytes. One megabyte is 8 megabits, so divide by 8: a 100 Mbps connection moves at most 12.5 MB of data every second.
Formula: MB = Mbit × 0.125

From internet speed to download time
Internet plans, speed tests and router specs measure throughput in megabits per second. Files are measured in megabytes. To estimate a download, divide the speed by 8 to get megabytes per second, then divide the file size by that figure. A 300 Mbps line gives 37.5 MB/s, so a 2 GB game update takes about 53 seconds under ideal conditions.
Real transfers lose some capacity to protocol headers, encryption and Wi-Fi interference, and the server on the other end may be slower than your line. A result around 80 to 90% of the ideal is normal on a wired connection.
Streaming services list their bandwidth needs in megabits per second as well. A video stream that needs 25 Mbps uses about 3.1 MB every second, or roughly 11 GB per hour, which matters on a capped mobile plan.
Quick formula
MB per second = Mbps ÷ 8Why speeds are sold in bits
Data travels down a wire or a radio link one bit at a time, so network hardware has always been rated in bits per second. Storage, on the other hand, is organized in bytes. Neither side is trying to inflate its numbers; they simply count different things.
Once you have megabytes, MB to GB shows how much of a data cap a download uses, and bits to bytes covers plain bit counts without a prefix.
Mobile carriers and phone settings mix the two again: a plan advertises speed in Mbps but meters usage in MB and GB. Divide by 8 whenever you cross from one side to the other.
Megabits to MB questions
How many megabits are in a megabyte?
Eight. A byte is 8 bits, and both units use the same decimal mega prefix, so 1 MB equals 8 Mbit.
How fast is 100 Mbps in MB per second?
12.5 MB/s at the very most. Protocol overhead, Wi-Fi conditions and the server's own speed usually keep real downloads a bit below that.
At 50 Mbps, how long should a 1 GB file take to download?
50 Mbps is 6.25 MB/s, and 1 GB is 1,000 MB, so the ideal time is 160 seconds, about 2 minutes 40 seconds. Expect a little longer in practice.
Is Mbps the same as MBps?
No. Mbps or Mb/s is megabits per second; MBps or MB/s is megabytes per second, which is 8 times more data.
