Tire pressures in bar and psi
Cars sold in Europe list tire pressures in bar, often with psi alongside, while gauges at US gas stations read psi. Most passenger car tires sit between about 2.0 and 2.6 bar, which is roughly 29 to 38 psi. The right figure for your car is on the placard in the driver's door frame or in the owner's manual, not on the tire sidewall, which gives the maximum.
Check tires cold, before driving or after the car has stood for a few hours. A tire warmed by driving reads several psi higher, and letting air out to match a cold figure leaves it underinflated.
- 2.2 bar≈ 31.9 psi, typical car tire
- 9 bar≈ 130.5 psi, espresso brewing
- 200 bar≈ 2,901 psi, scuba cylinder
What psi measures
Psi means pound-force per square inch, the force a one-pound mass exerts under standard gravity, spread over one square inch. Built from the exact pound, inch and standard gravity, it works out to 6,894.757 pascals. The bar is a rounder metric unit, 100 kPa, chosen to sit close to atmospheric pressure.
Pressure in kilopascals, as on Canadian and Australian tire placards, is on kPa to psi. The reverse of this page is psi to bar.
Gauge pressure, not absolute
Tire and compressor gauges show pressure above the surrounding air. A reading of 2.2 bar means about 3.2 bar absolute at sea level. Converting units does not change which kind of pressure a figure is.
