Feet and inches to centimeters
Heights usually come as feet plus inches, so convert both parts and add them. Multiply the feet by 30.48 and the inches by 2.54: 5 ft 8 in is 152.4 + 20.32 = 172.72 cm. Rounded to the nearest centimeter, 173 cm, it is what most forms expect.

International foot and survey foot
Since 1959 the foot has been exactly 0.3048 m. The United States also kept a slightly longer US survey foot of 1200/3937 m for land surveys. The two differ by about 2 parts per million, roughly 3 mm over a mile.
NIST and NOAA retired the survey foot at the end of 2022, so any new measurement uses the international foot shown here (NIST notice). For lengths under an inch, inches to mm is more practical.
Old land records may use survey feet
Deeds and state plane coordinates made before 2023 can be in US survey feet. Over a few meters the gap cannot be seen, but across long survey distances it adds up, so check which foot a document uses before mixing its numbers with new ones.
