What an acre and a hectare look like
A hectare is a square 100 m on each side, 10,000 m². An acre is 43,560 sq ft and has no neat square shape: as a square it would be about 63.6 m on a side. It is traditionally described as a strip one furlong long and one chain wide, 660 × 66 ft.
A standard soccer pitch of 105 × 68 m covers 0.71 ha, or 1.76 acres, which gives a handy picture of both units at once.
Survey acres in old records
US land records made before 2023 may use the survey acre, based on the slightly longer US survey foot. It is about 0.016 m² larger than the international acre used here, a difference of 4 parts per million that only matters on very large holdings (NIST notice).
For larger areas, square km to square miles uses the same foot; the reverse of this page is hectares to acres.
When a listing gives both units, check which one was converted. A farm sold as 160 acres is 64.75 ha; if the listing says 65 ha, the acre figure came first and the hectares were rounded. Land registers usually keep the unit the land was surveyed in.
