Inches to Feet
Type a length in inches and get feet. There are 12 inches in a foot, so the converter divides by 12; the notes below show how to turn the decimal into feet and inches.
Formula: ft = in × 0.0833333333333
Twelve inches make one foot. Divide by 12, and whatever is left over stays as inches.

Decimal feet or feet and inches
A calculator gives decimal feet, but tape measures and building plans use feet plus inches. To switch, keep the whole number as feet and multiply the decimal part by 12. For example, 77 in is 6.4167 ft; 0.4167 × 12 = 5, so the length is 6 ft 5 in.
The two notations are easy to mix up. 5.5 ft is 5 ft 6 in, not 5 ft 5 in, because half a foot is six inches. Writing 5′ 6″ with the foot and inch marks removes the doubt.
Do
- Write mixed lengths with both marks, for example 6′ 2″.
- Turn everything into inches before you add or subtract lengths, then convert the total back.
Avoid
- Reading 5.10 ft as 5 ft 10 in. It is 5 ft 1.2 in.
- Rounding each piece before adding a list of cuts: the small errors pile up.
Where the 12 comes from
The foot has been split into 12 inches for centuries, partly because 12 divides evenly by 2, 3, 4 and 6, which suits carpentry. Today both units are tied to the meter: the foot is exactly 0.3048 m and the inch exactly 25.4 mm, as listed in NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C.
Need metric instead? The Inches to mm converter and the feet to cm converter use the same exact values, and yards to meters covers the next step up.
Because the ratio is a whole number, inches to feet never needs a rounded factor. The only rounding happens when a decimal like 6.4167 ft is shortened, so keep the inch figure as long as you can and convert at the end.

Inches to feet questions
What is 60 inches in feet?
60 in is exactly 5 ft, because 60 ÷ 12 = 5 with nothing left over.
How do I write 70 inches in feet and inches?
70 ÷ 12 = 5 with 10 left over, so 70 in is 5 ft 10 in, often written 5′ 10″.
How many inches are in a yard?
A yard is 3 ft, which is 36 in. The yard is defined as exactly 0.9144 m.
Why does 5.5 ft not mean 5 ft 5 in?
The decimal is a fraction of a foot, not a count of inches. 0.5 ft is half of 12 in, which is 6 in, so 5.5 ft is 5 ft 6 in.
Is a foot always 12 inches?
Yes. The international foot is 0.3048 m and the inch 0.0254 m, so the ratio is exactly 12. The old US survey foot was a hair longer, but it was still divided into 12 inches.
