Two zones with the same rules
Mountain Time is UTC−7 in winter and UTC−6 in summer; Eastern Time is UTC−5 and UTC−4. Both follow the federal daylight saving schedule set by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and overseen by the US Department of Transportation: forward on the second Sunday of March, back on the first Sunday of November, at 2:00 AM local time.
Because the East Coast changes two hours earlier in real time, the gap is briefly 3 hours on the March change night and 1 hour on the November one, for two hours in the small hours. For any normal meeting, the answer is 2 hours.
The Arizona exception
Most of Arizona keeps Mountain Standard Time all year and skips daylight saving. In winter, Phoenix and Denver read the same and both are 2 hours behind New York. From March to November, Phoenix stays on UTC−7 while New York moves to UTC−4, so the gap grows to 3 hours.
The Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona does observe daylight saving, so it follows Denver. When a contact gives Arizona as the location, ask which town.
Easy parts
- The Denver and New York workdays overlap for six hours.
- Both zones change on the same dates, so recurring meetings stay put.
- Early Mountain mornings catch the East Coast at mid-morning.
Things to watch
- New York closes at 5:00 PM, which is only 3:00 PM in Denver.
- Arizona contacts shift by an hour every spring and fall.
- TV and live events listed in ET air 2 hours earlier on the Mountain clock.
The Denver and Washington, DC clocks show both zones now. Going the other way, use EST to MST; for the Central zone in between, see MST to CST.
