Why only one side moves

GMT, as used here, is a fixed reference with no daylight saving: the same as UTC+0, the base of the IANA time zone database. All the movement comes from Australia. New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania put their clocks forward on the first Sunday in October and back on the first Sunday in April, according to the NSW Government.

Queensland does not take part, so Brisbane and the Gold Coast stay at UTC+10. If your contact is in Brisbane, the 10-hour answer holds every day of the year.

One more twist: Australia's daylight-saving season runs across the new year. A season that starts in October ends the following April, so the list below shows one AEDT stretch that begins in one year and finishes in the next.

GMT is not always London

Check which GMT people mean

Many people write GMT when they mean the time in London. From late March to late October the UK is on BST (UTC+1), so London is one hour ahead of the times on this page.

  • For a meeting with someone in the UK, use the live clock for London.
  • For flight logs, servers or broadcast schedules, fixed GMT or UTC is usually what is meant.

In practice, an 8:00 AM start in Sydney is 10:00 PM GMT the evening before, or 9:00 PM during AEDT. A 5:00 PM finish in Melbourne is 7:00 AM or 6:00 AM GMT the same day, which is why handovers between Australian and European teams often happen at the start of the European morning. The live Melbourne clock shows the current local time.

AEST to GMT questions

How many hours is AEST ahead of GMT?

AEST is exactly 10 hours ahead of GMT. From the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, New South Wales and Victoria use AEDT, which is 11 hours ahead.

Is GMT the same as London time?

Only in the UK winter. From late March to late October London is on BST, one hour ahead of GMT. This page uses GMT as a fixed UTC+0 reference; the London clock page covers UK civil time.

What is 6:00 PM AEST in GMT?

It is 8:00 AM GMT the same day. During AEDT, 6:00 PM in Sydney is 7:00 AM GMT.

Does Queensland use AEDT?

No. Queensland keeps AEST all year, so Brisbane is always 10 hours ahead of GMT.
