Sydney's lead over India from April to October, when eastern Australia is on standard time

From October to April the lead grows to +5:30 because Sydney moves to daylight time. India never changes, so the season on the Australian side decides the gap.

The two Australian seasons

Eastern Australia runs on Australian Eastern Standard Time, UTC+10, through its winter. Daylight saving starts at 2:00 AM on the first Sunday in October, when clocks jump to 3:00 AM and the zone becomes AEDT, UTC+11. It ends at 3:00 AM on the first Sunday in April, when clocks fall back to 2:00 AM. The NSW Government publishes the dates each year.

India stays on UTC+5:30 the whole time, so the converter only has to know which side of those two Sundays your date falls on. Remember that the seasons are reversed: the larger gap belongs to the Australian summer, which overlaps the Indian winter.

Not every Australian city follows Sydney

Australia has several zones, and daylight saving is a state decision. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not use it. That gives three different answers for a contact in Australia during the southern summer: Sydney and Melbourne at +5:30 from India, Brisbane at +4:30, and Perth, on UTC+8, only 2 h 30 min ahead.

If you are not sure which city a colleague works from, check the live clocks for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth before you send a time.

Planning a call between India and Sydney

  • India's morning is Sydney's afternoon: 9:00 AM IST is 1:30 PM AEST or 2:30 PM AEDT.
  • A Sydney 9:00 AM start falls at 4:30 AM or 3:30 AM in India, so put calls late in the Australian day.
  • Recheck recurring invites in the week after the first Sunday of April and of October.
  • Write both clocks in the invite, for example 3:00 PM AEDT / 9:30 AM IST.
  • Adding a New York colleague? EST to AEST covers that leg, and the India clock shows your side.

IST to AEST questions

How far ahead of India is Sydney?

Sydney is 4 hours 30 minutes ahead of India from early April to early October (AEST) and 5 hours 30 minutes ahead from early October to early April (AEDT).

What time is it in Sydney when it is 10:00 AM in India?

It is 2:30 PM in Sydney during AEST and 3:30 PM during AEDT, on the same day.

Does Brisbane keep Sydney's clock?

Only in the Australian winter. Queensland does not use daylight saving, so Brisbane stays on AEST, 4 h 30 min ahead of India, all year.

Why does the IST to AEST gap change in April and October?

New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT move their clocks forward on the first Sunday in October and back on the first Sunday in April. India keeps the same offset all year.

Does AEST mean the same thing all year?

Strictly, AEST is UTC+10, the winter time. In summer the same cities run on AEDT, UTC+11, although many people keep writing AEST.
