85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.

sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.

PNG keeps every pixel; JPG keeps what the eye notices. For photos, that difference is a much smaller file with no visible change.
Why PNG photos get so large
PNG is a lossless format: it records every pixel exactly. That is ideal for logos, interface graphics and screenshots, where flat colors pack tightly. A photo is the opposite case. Skin, foliage, sky and sensor noise vary from pixel to pixel, and lossless compression cannot do much with that, so a PNG photo can be many megabytes.
Photos often end up as PNG by accident. Screenshots on many systems are saved as PNG, some editors export to PNG by default, and images copied from a document or a chat window are pasted as PNG. The result looks normal until you try to email it or upload it to a form with a size limit.
Converting such a file to JPG is the simplest way to bring it down to a sensible size. JPG was built for photographs and removes detail in a way the eye rarely notices at normal viewing sizes.
PNG and JPG at a glance
PNG
PNG image
An open raster format the PNG Development Group published in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. Compression is lossless and a full alpha channel keeps soft edges and cutouts clean. It suits screenshots, logos and interface graphics; photos come out much larger than as JPG.
- Lossless
- Transparency
- Still images only
JPG
JPG photo
The photo format standardized by the JPEG committee in the early 1990s and still the safest way to share a picture. It stores one still image with lossy compression and has no transparent areas. Phones, cameras, office software, printers and web forms all read it.
- Lossy
- No transparency
- Still images only
Why convertPNG to JPG is the size-cutting direction: you give up lossless storage and transparency to get a photo file a fraction as large that every form, inbox and website accepts. Do it for photos and photo-like screenshots; keep PNG for logos and text, and see PNG to WebP if the image is for your own website.
Both formats are universal. PNG has been a W3C Recommendation since 1996, and JPG goes back to ITU-T T.81 from 1992. Any phone, browser or office program opens either, so this conversion is about size and suitability rather than compatibility.
The one thing JPG cannot carry is transparency. A PNG logo or cutout with a see-through background gets a solid fill, white unless you choose otherwise. That is usually fine on a document or form, but not for a graphic that should sit on a colored web page.

PNG to JPG questions
How much smaller will my PNG be as a JPG?
It depends on the picture. Photos saved as PNG usually become many times smaller, because PNG stores every pixel losslessly. Screenshots and flat graphics gain less, and very simple graphics can even come out larger as JPG.
What happens to the transparent background when a PNG becomes a JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with a solid color. White is preset; choose black or any custom color under Transparent areas. Keep the PNG if you need the cutout.
Which JPG quality should I pick for PNG photos?
85 suits most photos. Use 90 or more for printing, and 70–80 when an upload limit is tight. Below about 60, edges and skies start to show block patterns.
Is PNG to JPG a good idea for screenshots with text?
Only if size really matters. JPG compression blurs sharp edges and adds faint noise around letters. If the file just needs to be smaller, try a quality of 90 or keep it as PNG and reduce the dimensions instead.
Can I turn the JPG back into the original PNG later?
You can convert it back, but the detail JPG removed does not return and the transparency is gone. Keep the original PNG files if you might need them.
Choosing the JPG quality
Quality settings for photos converted from PNG
- 60Small files for thumbnails or tight upload limits. Edges and smooth areas start to show blocks when you zoom in.
- 75Light files for web pages and chat apps. Fine at screen size, a little soft when cropped.
- 85The preset. Photos look the same as the PNG at normal size, and the file is far smaller.Recommended
- 92For prints and photos you will crop. Larger files, very little visible gain on screen.
- 100Maximum quality. The file grows a lot and is still lossy, so there is rarely a reason to go this high.
Quality is the only number most people need to touch. It controls how much detail the encoder may discard, on a scale from 1 to 100. Each step down saves bytes, but the savings get smaller while the visible damage grows, so the middle of the scale is where photos look best for their size.
If you need a specific size in kilobytes rather than a quality value, convert at the preset and then run the JPG through Compress Image, which searches for the right setting itself. Reducing the dimensions under Resize output helps too: halving the width leaves a quarter of the pixels to store.
Before converting graphics and screenshots
JPG is tuned for photographs. On images with sharp edges, such as text, line art, charts and user interface screenshots, its compression leaves a faint haze of noise around every edge, known as ringing. At high quality settings this is hard to see, but at lower ones it is obvious.
For those images, keep PNG when you can, or convert to WebP if the file is going on your own website. If a form insists on JPG, convert at quality 90 or above so text stays crisp.
Batches hold up to 20 files of up to 95 MB each, and every file in a batch gets the same quality and background. Uploads are deleted when processing ends and the JPGs 30 minutes later. For other targets such as WebP or AVIF, the Image Converter takes the same files.
Check transparent PNGs before converting
A PNG with a transparent background loses it as a JPG. Decide on the fill first:
- White suits documents, forms and most product photos.
- Black or a brand color suits dark slides and banners.
- If the cutout must stay transparent, keep PNG or use PNG to ICO for icons.
