85 keeps photos visually identical to the original. Lower it only when you need a smaller file.
JPG, BMP and EPS have no transparency. Transparent pixels are filled with this color.
Hex color used behind transparent pixels, e.g. #FFFFFF.
This format holds a single image. Choose GIF or WebP output if you want to keep the animation.
A multi-size icon contains several resolutions in one file; browsers and operating systems pick the one they need.
Keep the original dimensions, or enter one side and the aspect ratio is kept.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
Percentage of the original dimensions.
sRGB is right for screens and the web. Keep the original for print workflows; grayscale discards color.
Metadata only, 0 keeps the original value. Printers and some portals read this number; it does not change pixel dimensions.

- Frame

Why pull frames out of a GIF
An animated GIF is a sequence of still pictures packed into one file. That is convenient for sharing, but awkward when you want to work with the content. You may want a single moment as a still image for a slide or a thumbnail, a clean frame to use as a reaction picture, or the full sequence to edit, retime or turn into a sprite sheet for a game.
Most image editors open only the first frame of a GIF, or handle the frames clumsily. Separate PNG files are much easier: each frame is a normal image that any editor, slide tool or game engine can load, and the transparency is kept.
PNG is also the natural replacement for GIF as a still format. It was created in the 1990s as a patent-free successor to GIF and has none of GIF's 256-color limit.
Animators and game developers use frame exports to study and rework an animation, while teachers and writers often just need one clear still from a GIF for a handout or an article. Both cases start with the same step: getting the frames out as ordinary images.
GIF compared with PNG
GIF
GIF image
CompuServe's 1987 format, best known today for looping reaction clips. Each frame uses a small fixed color palette and lossless compression, and one color can be marked fully transparent. Every browser and chat app plays it, though gradients look banded and long clips make heavy files.

PNG
PNG image
An open raster format the PNG Development Group published in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. Compression is lossless and a full alpha channel keeps soft edges and cutouts clean. It suits screenshots, logos and interface graphics; photos come out much larger than as JPG.

Why convertGIF to PNG unpacks a palette-limited animation into full-color, lossless still frames you can edit one by one. You lose the motion in a single file and gain images free of GIF's 256-color ceiling. To turn an animated WebP into a GIF in the first place, see WebP to GIF.
Both formats are lossless, so the conversion copies every frame exactly. The GIF's palette limit stays visible in the extracted frames, since the colors were reduced when the GIF was made. What changes is the headroom: once a frame is a PNG, you can paint, blend and add gradients with millions of colors and save without loss.
Transparency improves too. GIF marks one palette color as fully transparent, while PNG has a full alpha channel. The extracted frames carry the GIF's transparent areas, and any soft edges you add later are stored properly.

GIF to PNG questions
How do I get every frame of a GIF as a separate image?
Leave Export every frame selected, which is the preset on this page. Each frame of the animation is written as its own PNG, numbered in playing order.
Does GIF to PNG improve the colors of the animation?
No. A GIF frame holds at most 256 colors, and the PNG copies exactly those. What PNG adds is room: you can edit a frame with millions of colors and save it without the palette limit.
Do the PNG frames keep the GIF's transparent background?
Yes. The transparent color in the GIF becomes fully transparent pixels in the PNG, so frames can be placed over any background.
Why do some extracted frames show only part of the picture?
Some GIFs save space by storing only the changed area of each frame. The converter composes each frame onto the previous ones, so every PNG should show the full picture as it appears during playback.
Can I turn the PNG frames back into a GIF?
Yes, with an animation tool or by converting a video of them. If you edited the frames, keep the PNGs as your master copies and export a GIF only at the end.
Why is a single PNG frame larger than the whole GIF?
The GIF may store only changed areas between frames and uses a small palette, both of which keep it compact. Each PNG holds a complete frame on its own.
Common problems and their fixes
Most GIF frame exports go smoothly, but a few situations come up again and again. The table pairs each with its fix. If a GIF will not convert at all, check that it really is a GIF; files saved from some sites are animated WebP or short videos with a .gif name.
Frame delays are not stored in PNG files, since each one is a still image. If you plan to rebuild the animation, note the timing first, or keep the original GIF as a reference.
- What you see: Only one PNG came out of an animated GIF
- What to do: Set Animated input to Export every frame and convert again.
- What you see: Frames show flickering fragments in another tool
- What to do: That tool reads raw frame data. The PNGs from this page are composed into full frames, so use them instead.
- What you see: The frames have a white box around the subject
- What to do: The GIF itself has no transparency there. Remove the background in an editor and save the PNG again.
- What you see: Far too many frames to handle
- What to do: Long GIFs can hold hundreds of frames. For video-like clips, Video to GIF and video tools give better control over frame rate.
Working with the frames
The frames download together and are numbered in playing order, so they line up correctly in an editor's layer list or a game engine's sprite importer. For sprite sheets, keep the frames at their original size; for slides or thumbnails, pick the best frame and resize it with the Resize Image tool.
You can convert up to 20 GIFs per batch, each up to 95 MB. Uploads are deleted after processing and the PNG frames 30 minutes later. For textures in Source engine games, the frames can go on to PNG to VTF.
